The Pilates Center

The Pilates Center The Pilates Center is an internationally renowned studio providing the best in classical Pilates! We offer private lessons and group classes.

Two sisters, Amy Taylor Alpers and Rachel Taylor Segel, trained under Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates' protege and inheritor of his studio in NYC. In 1990 the sisters founded their studio, The Pilates Center in Boulder and created their Teacher Training Program with Romana in 1991. They have strived to foster the legacy and tradition of the original, classical method of Pilates and continue to

develop the highest caliber of teachers, with the most comprehensive and in-depth classical teacher program available. Our goal at TPC is not just to teach you how to do Pilates but how to heal people with Pilates. Our commitment is to health. It’s our mission to heal the world by helping people heal themselves with Pilates - that was Joseph Pilates’ ultimate desire. Almost anyone who wants to can learn how to be a Pilates Instructor. You can get a certification over a weekend! We believe this is merely the starting point and does little to truly allow the instructor to assess each client’s unique needs and provide them with the life changing possibilities Pilates so powerfully offers – the potential to truly heal and, thereby, “return to life.”

True teaching requires a profound level of both deeper knowledge of the subject matter and a calling to truly care for the unique nature of each client’s personal journey back to full mind-body-spirit health. And that is the approach we embrace when teaching our clients and training our future teachers through our various Teacher Training Programs.

Sometimes the exercise you think they’re not ready for is the one that shows you what’s been missing.

As teachers, levels give us a way to organize, understand, and progressively teach a very large body of work. But the levels aren’t the method. It’s all Pilates.

And as we move further into the work, the later exercises can reveal something about everything that came before. A missing connection. A place that needs more strength. A relationship we hadn’t seen yet.

That’s where we’re going in Classical Method Studies Part II.

We’ll dive into Levels III–V, not as a collection of harder exercises to master, but as part of one complete method. Stepping back from the individual trees so we can better understand, and teach, the forest.

September 30–October 4 in Boulder + on Zoom.

CMS will not be offered again until 2028. Sign up today through the link in our bio.

What if the exercise you taught three exercises ago, or three levels ago, is the key to teaching the one in front of you now?

In this clip from Classical Method Studies, Aubrey draws on Elephant and even Teaser to help clarify the teaching of Up Stretch. Not because the exercises are the same, but because the ideas, actions, and experiences within the Method continue to layer.

That is what we are studying at Classical Method Studies.

The exercise facts matter. The setup matters. The choreography matters. But we have our online lectures for that data.

When we come together for CMS, we get to go beyond it.

We look at the Method as a whole. How the order teaches. How one exercise prepares the body for another. How something experienced in Level I can become a teaching tool again in Level III, IV, or V. How transitions, rhythm, tempo, partnering, and language all become part of teaching the work.

This spring, we began with the earlier levels. September 30–October 4, we continue that study, layering the Method all the way through Level V.

And if CMS has been on your list, this is the time to join us. After this fall session, Classical Method Studies will not be offered again until 2028.

In loving memory of Leigh Reece, we are honored to announce the establishment of the Leigh Reece Pilates Scholarship.

Leigh believed deeply in the power of Pilates and dedicated herself to the method, her teaching, and her students with curiosity, discipline, joy, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

This scholarship was created to carry forward something Leigh cared deeply about: the preservation and continuation of the Classical Pilates method. It will support a future student pursuing their education through The Pilates Center Teacher Training Program, helping another teacher deepen their understanding of the work and, in turn, share it with others.

We are currently raising funds to build the scholarship, and we invite our community to be part of honoring Leigh and carrying her love of Pilates forward.

The scholarship application process will open at a later date, with more information to come.

May Leigh’s love of Pilates inspire generations to come.

Sometimes becoming a better teacher isn’t about having more answers. It’s about finding a better way to communicate what you already understand.

During Classical Method Studies, Amy shared the story of her client Frank and the moment one simple metaphor finally helped something click: you can repair the whole car, but if you put it on flat tires, it doesn’t matter.

Good teaching asks us to keep thinking. To find the image, the metaphor, the language that helps the person in front of us understand. To collaborate with our clients rather than simply tell them what to do.

And sometimes, the clients who ask the most questions make us better teachers because they require us to understand the work more deeply ourselves.

Join us this fall for Classical Method Studies, September 30–October 4, as we dive into Level III–V material and keep exploring not only what we teach, but how we teach it.

Join us in Boulder or on Zoom. Recordings available for 30 days.

What makes a teacher training program different isn’t just what you learn. It’s how you learn to think, see, and teach.

At The Pilates Center, our Teacher Training Program is a deep study of the Classical Pilates Method that goes far beyond learning exercises.

You’ll study the Method as an interconnected system. You’ll learn from multiple voices. You’ll be supported through mentorship, observation, practice, feedback, and community. And most importantly, you’ll develop the skills to take what you know and thoughtfully teach the person in front of you.

Because becoming a great teacher isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about building a strong foundation and continuing to ask better questions as your understanding grows.

Breath isn’t just something we add to the movement. It changes the movement.

From Kaile Ziemba’s “Above All Learn How to Breathe Correctly” workshop during our France Immersion, exploring breath as rhythm, support, and a way to take pressure off the body.

As Kaile reminds us here, moving the human body is already complicated. We don’t always need to micromanage every muscle. Sometimes the work is learning to feel the whole body moving together.

This is the kind of study we love. Returning to Joseph Pilates’ words, experiencing the ideas in our own bodies, and discovering how they can inform the way we move and teach today.

Next stop: Boulder.

Join Kaile Ziemba, Amy Taylor Alpers, Kelli Burkhalter Hutchins, and Aubrey Dalke for our September Immersion, September 16–19, with four days of classes, workshops, movement, and study.

Everything is à la carte, with options to join us in Boulder or on Zoom, plus 30-day access to the recordings.

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend, teacher, and Licensed Teacher Trainer, Leigh Reece, after her long fight with ovarian cancer.

Leigh has been part of The Pilates Center community for nearly two decades. She graduated from our Advanced Teacher Training Program in 2009, and over the years, her relationship with this work continued to deepen as a student, teacher, mentor, Post Graduate, and Licensed Teacher Trainer.

Leigh was part of our very first Post Graduate Studies cohort, where she explored Pilates with children and athletes. Years later, she returned to Post Graduate Studies, continuing to ask questions and deepen her understanding through her work with Archival Pilates and strength.

That was Leigh. She never stopped learning.

She believed profoundly in the power of Pilates, not simply as movement, but as a practice that could transform the body, strengthen the mind, and enrich the spirit. She brought curiosity, discipline, joy, and an unwavering commitment to the method, while caring deeply for the students and teachers she had the opportunity to guide.

We are incredibly grateful for the many years Leigh chose to share with this community. Her love of the work, her dedication to teaching, and the lives she touched through Pilates will remain part of us.

In one of Leigh’s final messages to her own community, she left them with words that feel especially fitting as we remember her:

“Choose life. In everything you do.”

We will miss you deeply, Leigh. We are so grateful we had the privilege of knowing you, learning alongside you, and calling you part of The Pilates Center family. We love you, and we will miss you more than words can say.

We’re going to keep teaching what we believe in.

For our clients in Boulder, that means thoughtful, attentive teaching rooted in the full Classical Pilates Method.

For our teachers and trainees, it means going deeper into the work, continuing to ask questions, and holding the standard of comprehensive Pilates education high.

Because the best way to carry the Method forward is to teach it well.
