G for Goby, specifically highlighting the stunning Fire Goby. 🔥

These brilliantly colored, lightning-fast fish are a favorite for sharp-eyed divers and macro photographers. You'll usually spot them hovering just above the sandy bottom, facing the current to catch drifting zooplankton. They are famous for their prominent dorsal fin, which they constantly flick back and forth to communicate with their mates and stabilize themselves in the water. If a predator approaches, they dart into a tight crevice and use that same dorsal fin to wedge themselves securely in place, making them nearly impossible for predators to pull them out!

Today we're highlighting the reef's ultimate master of disguise: F for Flounder. 🌊🔍

While these flatfish are famous for their ability to perfectly camouflage themselves against the sandy ocean floor, their biology is even stranger. When a flounder is born, it swims upright and has an eye on each side of its head, just like a standard fish. But as it matures, one eye migrates entirely over the top of its head to join the other! This allows the adult flounder to lie completely flat on the seabed with both eyes looking up, waiting to ambush an unsuspecting meal.

Dive with a purpose! 🌊🐚 Ocean First has partnered with Shedd Aquarium to support critical queen conch (Aliger gigas) research in Key Largo—and certified divers can join the effort!

Through citizen science survey dives led by Dr. Andy Kough, volunteers help collect essential data on conch density, shell thickness, and habitat distribution to help restore Florida's threatened conch populations.

Our A-Z of Marine Life series continues with one of the most graceful swimmers on the reef: E for Eagle Ray.

Gliding through the water with wingspans that can reach up to 10 feet, these pelagic beauties are always a thrill to spot on a dive. Just like a human fingerprint, the striking white spots and rings on their dark dorsal side are entirely unique to each individual.

If you watch them closely, you might catch them using their specialized, duck-like snouts to dig through the sandy bottom in search of crunchy meals like clams and snails.

Today we're highlighting D for Dolphin. Seeing a pod of these highly intelligent mammals underwater or playing in the wake of a dive boat is always an unforgettable experience. 🐬 Because they are conscious breathers and must actively surface for air, they can't fall fully asleep like we do. Instead, they rest one hemisphere of their brain at a time. This allows them to continue surfacing for oxygen and keep a watchful eye open for predators while catching some rest. 💤

Have you ever had a dolphin encounter on a dive or boat trip? Share your story below! 👇

Continuing our A-Z of Marine Life, we're focusing on one of the reef's most iconic residents: C for Clownfish.

Beyond their famous relationship with anemones, these vibrant fish are actually sequential hermaphrodites. If the dominant female of their group dies, the most dominant male naturally changes s*x to take her place. To survive on the reef, they develop a specialized mucus layer that makes them immune to their host's venomous stingers. But don't let their small size fool you—they are fiercely territorial and will bravely defend their home from much larger fish or even a curious diver!

Where did you log your first clownfish sighting? 🪸

This past Saturday, Ocean First and Boulder County Volunteer Leaders had an incredible time participating in The Buffs Big Event—an inaugural community-wide day of service hosted by CU Boulder’s Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement (SLICE) to honor CU Boulder’s 150th anniversary! 🦬💙

Together, volunteers across the city tackled park management, neighborhood beautification, garden maintenance, and house construction. Ocean First had the privilege of focusing on local waterway conservation by leading a creek cleanup along Boulder Creek alongside the awesome team from the CU Scuba Club. 🌊🧹

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us to give back, protect our local waters, and keep Boulder beautiful! 🏔️✨

Hidden in plain sight. 🏔️👁️

Swipe through to see what life looks like at 14,000 feet in India’s remote Spiti Valley:

1️⃣ Spot the cats: A mother snow leopard and her cub resting on the rocky scree. Can you spot both? 🐆

2️⃣ Rangrik Village: Ancient, sun-drenched Himalayan architecture nestled right beneath the towering, snow-covered peaks.

3️⃣ The Blue Sheep (Bharal): The snow leopard’s primary prey, blending seamlessly into the snowy cliffside.

Searching for the "Ghost of the Mountains" meant pushing far off the beaten path—navigating treacherous roads, hiking extreme peaks, and spending freezing hours scanning these exact landscapes.

Come hear the full story of the expedition and view breathtaking shots from the trail!
