— August 22, 2026 — Massachusetts Author Joseph Lischinsky announces the publication of PADUCAH: The Gaseous Diffusion Legacy, a compelling examination of the history, people, and enduring legacy of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant and the Cold War era atomic workforce.
Drawing upon decades of experience in health physics and health and safety, Lischinsky provides readers with a firsthand perspective on an important chapter in America’s nuclear history. The book explores the human stories behind the massive industrial effort that supported the nation’s Cold War mission while examining the occupational, environmental, and health-and-safety challenges that accompanied that work.
Lischinsky’s connection to this history is deeply personal and professional. He served as a member of a U.S. Department of Energy investigation team examining the three gaseous diffusion plants during the 1999–2000 timeframe. As part of that effort, the team interviewed approximately 300 Cold War-era atomic workers across the three sites.
Those interviews revealed more than facts and statistics. They captured the memories, experiences, sacrifices, and concerns of the men and women who worked inside these facilities. The investigation also required extensive reviews of historical records and documents—sometimes under challenging conditions in cold storage facilities, warehouses, deactivated research libraries, and national archives.
PADUCAH: The Gaseous Diffusion Legacy brings together the historical significance of the Paducah facility and the human experiences behind its legacy. It offers readers an opportunity to better understand not only what happened at the plant, but also the people whose lives were shaped by their work there.
