🌲 PMBAR Survival Guide: Don’t Just Finish, Flourish 🌲
The Pisgah Mountain Bike Adventure Race isn’t your average XC loop. It’s a 50-100 mile test of navigation, grit, and how well you can tolerate your teammate after 8 hours of hike-a-bike.

At McHone Performance Training, we’ve seen what separates the podium finishers from the “lost in the laurels” crowd. Here is your essential survival guide for tackling the most legendary race in the East.

🗺️ 1. The Mind Over Map

PMBAR is a navigation race first, a bike race second.

The Strategy: Take 5 minutes at the start to breathe and map your route. Racing into a dead-end trail because you were “moving fast” is the quickest way to a DNF.

The Pro Tip: Check your checkpoints twice. Confirming your location on the topo map saves more time than a carbon wheelset ever will.

🔋 2. Fueling the Furnace

You’re looking at a caloric burn that would make a pro Tour rider blush.

Liquid Gold: Aim for 60-90g of carbs per hour. Don’t rely solely on solids; your stomach will eventually revolt against bars.

Cramp Management: Pisgah humidity is no joke. Pre-load with electrolytes 24 hours before the start.

🛠️ 3. Gear for the “Pisgah Surprise”

If it can break, Pisgah will break it.

The Essentials: Multi-tool with a chain breaker, spare derailleur hanger, and a tire plug kit that you can reach in seconds.

Water Filtration: You will run out of bottles. Carry a lightweight filter (like a Sawyer Squeeze) to tap into those mountain streams.

🤝 4. The Teammate Pact

You are only as fast as your slowest moment.

Communication: Check in on your partner’s fueling and mood. If they go quiet, they’re bonking. Feed them immediately.

Perspective: Remember why you’re out there. It’s beautiful, it’s brutal, and you’re doing it by choice!

“Victory in Pisgah isn’t about the highest FTP; it’s about the fewest mistakes.” — McHone Performance Training

Happy Earth Day 🌎

As mountain athletes Team MPT honors the National Forest and our public spaces with the ethos of Leave No Trace.

Let us remember that our actions of stewardship have a ripple effect on our communities.

Ways we can support them:

Picking up one piece of trash per day.(at the trail head parking lot or as you walk through your neighborhood)

Volunteer - find a local organization to help.

Make eco-friendly choices when possible. Bring your Nalgene, recycle and upcycle ♻️

Hard work is only half the battle. The other half? Knowing when to back off. 📉🔥

At McHone Performance Training, this protocol ensures you aren’t just training hard, but training smart.

The Deload Week.

A deload isn’t a week off; it’s a strategic reduction in training volume and intensity. It’s the “Secret Sauce” that prevents overtraining and allows your central nervous system (CNS) to catch up to your muscles.

🧠 The Science: Why we do it

According to the principle of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), your body needs a period of lower stress to “supercompensate.” Without it, you hit a plateau. With it, you hit new PRs.

🛠 The McHone Deload Protocol:

Reduce Intensity: Drop your loads to 50-60% of your 1RM.

Cut Volume: Reduce total sets and reps by roughly 30-50%.

Focus on Quality: Use the extra energy to master your movement patterns and technique.

Prioritize Recovery: Double down on SMR (foam rolling), active stretching, and sleep.

The Goal: Show up next Monday feeling explosive, recovered, and ready to crush the next phase of your program. 🚀

Stop Redlining. Start Recovering. 👊

When was the last time you took a planned deload? Let us know in the comments! 👇
