WHEN IS YOUR “GO MOMENT?”

We spend a bunch of time in class training the “WHAT TO DO” in the moment of chaos. But we need to emphasis also the “WHEN.” When is violence the answer? When is it morally/legally APPROPRIATE to use the tool of violence?

Part of the answer is an intellectual exercise. Part of the answer is cultural, legal, or religious. It’s wise to give this quandary some consideration before, not just after the event.

Also— what are the repercussions?

For example, let’s say you just survived— you “won”over the attacker. But you survived by incapacitating if not killing the attacker. The courts, the community, your family, the attacker’s family— all parties may be looking at you aggressively. You can be simultaneously— a survivor, a hero, a murderer, a target.

We’ll be exploring this subject more in class.

Training with this principle in mind can save your life.

The author, Chris, references “story.” It is another word for distraction in the moment of chaos, meaning overwhelm, meaning possible FREEZE. Train with an unambiguous, lasered intent — injure the target now.

“Scenarios only matter if your job involves the threat of violence and it typically presents in the same way, like a car stop or building entry and room clearing. Then it’s of the utmost importance that you train for the dangerous environment and situations you routinely find yourself in.

For the rest of us, I can almost guarantee it’ll never happen the way you imagine it will, and “setting the stage” by running scenarios through your head is just taking up time and space you should be using for training the mechanical facts of injury.

As a side note, I’ve noticed over the years that people’s fascination with story, set up and scenario-building is directly proportional to their discomfort with getting on the mats and training. They’d rather talk about it than do the work.

I have no idea what the set up will be if it happens to you. But I do know a couple things that will be present in every violent situation you should find yourself in: You, and at least one other person who is full of targets and potential injuries. Train for what you know will be there, and not for the distractions that seem important.

Fixation with “the story” is the rational mind trying to make sense of the irrational; but making sense of the situation is not a requirement for injury — the solution to every possible violent scenario.

Instead of focusing on the story… just write the ending."

Hi all

LET’S ZOOM!

I am beginning ZOOM classes until we get a chance to evaluate a likely second wave to COVID. Wednesday and Saturdays — regular times. 5:30 pm. Wed 10:00 am Sat

And, by the way, thanks to Rob Condon, Dave Almquist, and Bill Degroot, for continuing to encourage me to get something going. Also thanks to Lara Gillease for providing me ZOOM training yesterday.

The plan is to run a regular styled class. Notice we will run the cardio/core at the beginning of both classes. It would look like this:

— Sign in: 5:30 pm Wed or 10:00 am Sat

— 30 minutes cardio/core

— Sign in, if you’re just arriving

— one hour training, including our usual videos, news or review.

It should be interesting! The virus mutates, so must we.
