John Steven Foster ( β€œPotts” )

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of John Foster, a much-loved and respected member of our club community.

Memorial Tribute πŸ’šπŸ–€ 5014

01.01.1950 - 04.05.2026

John was one of the originals of the club, Senior Team Playing Number 40, and a true clubman in every sense.

He was part of the group who helped build the current club at Bryan Heath Park from scratch, spending countless hours volunteering his time. Roofing was apparently his thing, or so he told me.

John served the club for decades, including as Assistant Club Captain in 1981–82, Vice President across several seasons, President in 1992–93, and a committee member throughout the 80s and 90s.

On the field, John was a talented all-round cricketer. He captained the 2C team in the late 80s and early 90s, scored over 500 runs in the 1979–80 season, and made 106 in 4A grade in 1982–83. He won trophies for fielding, batting, highest score, outstanding performance, two-day all-rounder, and many team awards throughout his playing years.

He was also heavily involved with the junior section, mentoring a generation of young players who went on to play senior cricket both here and throughout the Hutt Valley.

John was reliable, positive, and always willing to step up whether that meant helping around the club, sharing ideas, or even jumping into the kitchen when volunteers were short. He never missed Old Timers’ Days or AGMs, and he remained one of the club’s important links to the original group of players who formed the club in the late 40s.

He loved a beer, loved watching his son play cricket at Bryan Heath Park, and was partial to a brandy and dry.

After knowing John for 50 years, I will miss his infectious energy. Bryan Heath Park will seem quieter now.

Rest in peace, Potts.
Alan Broadhurst
Chairman, Wainuiomata Cricket Club

A memorial service for John will be held at 2.00pm, Friday 15 May, at the Wainuiomata Rugby Club, 2 Moohan Street, Wainuiomata. The family have been overwhelmed by the love and support shown over recent days. In lieu of flowers, donations to Te Omanga Hospice or Wellington Free Ambulance would be greatly appreciated.

Kerala Firebirds
Established in January 2025 by a passionate group of cricket players from the Kerala community. What began as a close-knit community team quickly evolved into something much bigger.
Over time, Kerala Firebirds opened its doors to players from diverse backgrounds, bringing together talent from different communities and varying levels of cricketing experience. This inclusivity and commitment to excellence helped shape the team into one of the strongest and most competitive sides in the Wellington cricket scene.
In a short span, Kerala Firebirds has already made a significant mark by winning two of the biggest tournaments in the Greater Wellington regionβ€”an achievement that reflects the team’s dedication, unity, and skill.

Final week of club cricket and there’s some great action lined up this weekend.

Our Prem side heads into day two of their final against North City and an outright win here will secure promotion to the Pearce Cup.

The Reserves, who won their grade last weekend play their timed cricket final against Vic Uni, looking to finish their successful season on a high, they play alongside the Prems at the fortress.

The Thirds travel to Petone Rec to take on Naenae. Maddogs are in a grand final showdown out at Trentham Memorial Park, while the Hasbeens face Naenae at Delaney Park in their 3v4 playoff. The Oddbunch round things out at Richard Prouse Park against Taita.

Plenty of games worth getting along to this weekend - and don’t forget Prizegiving kicks off at 6!

We’d also like to give a special shoutout to our newest sponsor, Fine Touch Catering, for their support of the club. Great to have you on board. Be sure to check them out for catering your functions!

Big weekend ahead for cricket! 🏏

Huge shoutout to our Women’s Design & Build team, who are into their grade grand final for the second year running. Head down to Bryan Heath Park at 2pm to show your support - let’s see if they can go back to back!

They’ll be playing alongside our Premier Men, who are up against top of the table North City. A win here could put them in reach of a historic promotion to the Pearce Cup.

Our Seconds are also in a strong position, sitting top of their grade and pushing for promotion into Premier Reserve out at Karori Park.

Elsewhere, the Thirds are off to Grenada North, Maddogs are at Richard Prouse Park in Wainui, Hasbeens are heading out to Delaney Park, and Oddbunch are at Petone Rec.

Plenty of cricket happening this weekend - get along and support the green and black πŸ’šπŸ–€
