Lucy TeMoananui , potential participant in the Altex Two-Handed Western Circuit, has just set sail for her second attempt sailing to the subAntarctic Auckland Islands. The first attempt was in January this year, however big lows marching across the southern ocean made it too difficult to depart Bluff. Fingers crossed this attempt will be more successful. There are four of them sailing south, updates to follow.

Virtual marks are a relatively new feature of ocean racing, providing a new variety of options for routes, and the ability to take races into areas that don’t have natural way points. Big name races using virtual marks include the Pacific Northwest Offshore, and the RORC Morgan Cup. The Two-handed Western circuit will include a virtual mark near Farewell Spit.

Rounding a mark without a visual reference can be tricky. To help, our crews will be provided with coordinates for 2 additional points, forming a triangle. This creates a sense of scale when viewed on a chartplotter, and makes it easier to judge the approach and confirmation of a successful rounding as you enter and exit the triangle area.
