You don’t stay in one job for 21 years unless you genuinely believe in the place, the people and the community behind it.

Today we’re celebrating our Pool Manager Steve’s 21-year work anniversary at Splash Palace, alongside an incredible 28 years working in the aquatic industry.

Over that time, he’s seen almost everything change.

New hydroslides, changing rooms, learners pool, and innovative ways to keep our facility running such as switching from coal-powered heating to wood chip. All of this contributes toward our growing demand, with our facility now tracking toward nearly 400,000 annual visits a year.

The reason he keeps coming back has stayed pretty simple: the staff, the community, and knowing the work helps people improve their health and wellbeing.

Originally from the West Coast, he says what has kept him in Southland is family, the people, and the lifestyle.

“Invercargill is a great place to raise a family. The people are friendly, and we are in close proximity to many great places around Southland which makes for fantastic weekend day trips. Sometimes we don't reflect how lucky we are down here.”

Beyond Splash Palace, he also contributes widely across the aquatics sector through national Poolsafe assessment work, disability and inclusion initiatives, water treatment training, and supporting other community pools throughout the region.

And after nearly three decades in aquatics, his advice is simple:

“Give swimming a chance, make it a habit and you will see the health and wellbeing benefits. It’s a place to clear your mind and reset.”

Thank you, Steve, for 21 years of leadership, community spirit and steady hands behind one of Southland’s busiest community facilities.

Also, after 28 years in aquatics and a lifetime on the golf course, he confirms both require patience… although apparently he still runs a pool better than he plays golf! 🏌️
