Senses of August

Sight — Paddling down the river with Alanna. Old willow trees hanging over the banks and vivid blue dragonflies zapping about. English summer in all its lushness.

Sound — R.E.M. — Nightswimming. Takes me back to simpler times.

Smell — Eucalyptus. A little ritual I’ve carried with me from my Rugby League days… if you know, you know.

Taste — Pizza in “Old Bro” with an old bro 😂 We’ve gone from swapping pizzas around beach fires as young, carefree dive instructors to sitting on an old bench watching the sky turn pink, twenty-something years of friendship later. You can keep your fancy restaurants ❤️

Touch — North Sea swims.

August was so full of love and adventures. Even with its sting in the tail, I’ll look back and see myself happy.

Senses of July

Sight — Sea lavender in abundance. I’ve never really noticed it before, but the soft lilac woven into the muted tones of the salt marshes. 🫶🏻

Sound — We spent a few days along the flint beaches of Norfolk this month. The sound of the flints rattling as the waves retreat is like soft wind chimes. So relaxing. 😌

Smell — All the layers of summer scents… Hawaiian Tropic, vanilla body butter and Sol de Janeiro. 💛

Taste — Bambu, Colchester with Alanna - More Than The Mat Pilates. Always so fresh and crunchy.

Touch - Salt water and sunshine.

July felt like it moved at a pace that I wasn’t keeping up with, these things helped slow it down 🌺

In NZ we have a saying:

“Do the mahi, get the treats!”

Mahi = work.

In Pilates, the results come from repetition, the same movement patterns and clusters, repeated week after week, while incrementally increasing your exposure to load. This is how we become stronger, more confident, and able to move with more ease and joy.

These efforts don’t go unnoticed. I’m deeply grateful for all of you, whether you’re dragging yourself in at 6am despite your boss not being on the same page, or busing it in en masse, fuelled by caffeine and the promise of a slice of cake afterwards.

Thank you for trusting the process, showing up consistently, and doing the mahi.

There’ll be no stopping us! 💪

Another birthday!

What a joy to be living and breathing, through the successes and the f**k ups, the pain and the joy.

So grateful for it all and the opportunity to wake up each day and try to be a little better, a little kinder and a little happier than the last.

Thank you for being part of my little life 😘
