“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” — Jon Kabat-Zinn 🌊
One of the highlights of our Bali wellness week was getting everyone out on a surfboard.
There were a few nerves and reservations, and for some, it was well outside their comfort zone. A quick group lesson on the sand, 1:1 coaching in the water, and everyone gave it a good go, navigating the waves in their own way and coming away feeling braver and prouder than they expected.
Life is a bit like this too, don’t you think? We can’t always control what comes our way, but we can try and find ways to look after ourselves as we move through it.
Sometimes we find our balance and ride it out. Sometimes we get dumped by a wave we never saw coming and need a moment to catch our breath before trying again.
And it’s important to remember we don’t always know what waves other people are navigating. Someone might look like they’re riding along just fine, while underneath the surface they’re doing their best to stay afloat.
I’ve been reminded lately how much the little things matter. A text to check in. A coffee catch-up. A hug, a listening ear, or simply a smile that says, I see you.
Small things, perhaps, but they can make all the difference.
We won’t always stay on the board, and we won’t always get it right. But there’s something to be said for giving things a go, finding our feet again when we need to, and remembering that we don’t have to navigate every wave alone.
