Our final pool match on day 2 saw a rematch of last year’s semi final clash between CFL and Afghan United.

With Afghan United beating Gorkhali by 3 goals, the boys had to win to advance to the semis.

After a cagey first 10 minutes team CFL sprung to life, creating numerous chances and dominating play. Afghan United hardly got a look on, with our defence proving rock solid.

The second half was one way traffic, with our boys applying relentless pressure. With Afghan United knowing a draw was enough, they parked the bus.

Despite outplaying last year’s finalists, the boys couldn’t quite find the goal they needed, with Afghan United hanging on for a draw and advancing to the semis on goal difference.

It was a gutting way to end the tournament, especially remaining undefeated. Winning 4 games and drawing 1 would usually see you through to the semi finals, but the tournament format meant it wasn’t to be.

To remain undefeated, scoring 15 goals and only conceding 2 in our 5 games, showed the high standard the CFL produced.

Congratulations to everyone who represented the CFL this tournament. Full recap and snaps to come.

The CFL side’s first of two shield pool games on day 2 saw us take on Gorkhali. We dominated from start to finish, creating a number of chances. Late in the first half Nathan Maisey beat 3 defenders before putting in a driven ball across the face of goal for Maac Bond to tap in back post.

From there the boys were in cruise control, taking the 3 points and setting up a clash against last year’s semi finalists Afghan United.

Wynton Rufer Shield victory 🏆

Putting regular season rivalry aside, the CFL rep boys joined forces to fight to retain the Wynton Rufer Shield.

Historically CFL are underdogs, and with a wealth of talent available from across the club scene for the Cross Whites, it was another clash where we had to be at our best.

15 minutes in the Cross Whites took the lead when their striker danced past 4 players to slot it home.

Eventually the momentum shifted and the CFL boys strung together a strong period of threatening attacking phases. Kyle Tagumasi came close to scoring after a great exchange of play, while a number of half chances didn’t quite fall our way.

Debutant Victor Cleber pulled off a great save against the run of play to keep the deficit to just 1.

Towards the back end of the half CFL were rewarded for their attacking play when captain Mark Carroll hit a shot from outside the box forcing the keeper into a save. Sam Pepper’s anticipation saw him follow up the parry to smashed it home from close range and draw level.

The second half saw the CFL boys get more share of the ball where we looked to dictate play. The Cross Whites locked down the first 20 minutes after halftime, negating a lot of hopeful passages of play.

In the final 20 minutes the game opened up with both teams having half chances, but in the end the game couldn’t be split.

1-1 at full time saw the clash go to penalties for the second time in 3 years.

The boys held their nerve from the spot, while keeper Victor produced two saves to take us to the brink of victory. Zareef Ifraz then stepped up as our 9th pen taker and buried it in the bottom left to secure victory and retain the Wynton Rufer Shield for the third year in a row.

A big thank you to Kim Beale and the Cross Whites for organising this clash every year. It remains a huge part of the CFL calendar and is an occasion where we can celebrate football, faith, and community. ❤️
