Torro United AFC

Torro United AFC Torro Utd AFC are a rural club north of Navan, Co. Meath. 2 Senior male & 2 Senior female sides The Women's Team compete in the NEFL.

Torro Utd is located 5 miles outside Navan on the Kingscourt/Navan road. Torro Utd all began in 1970 when Robbie Leonard, Jimmy Bellew and Hugh McHugh held a meeting in Kilberry old school to see what interest there was in setting up a soccer team in the Parish. There was a great turnout and it was unanimously agreed that a club be formed. Robbie Leonard chaired the meeting and asked everyone to t

hink of a name. When they met again a week later a variety of names were presented but it was the name that was put forward by Jimmy Bellew (the name of a former club in England) that was selected – TORRO UTD

At present Torro Utd is one of the fastest growing clubs in Co. Meath, fielding three Senior teams 2 Men's teams and 1 Women's team. Torro Utd's 1st Team competes in the North East Football League Division 1 and Torro Utd's Reserve Team competes in the North East Football League Division 3A. This season Torro Utd will have 24 underage teams competing in the North Eastern Counties Schoolboys/Girls Leagues. They range from Under 7s up to Youths including a girls section that caters for girls 16 or under (U8, U10, U12, U14, U16). We also have a 'Mini Stars' section catering for 4-6 year old boys and girls.

Torro Utd U13 girls made the journey to premier division side Trim Celtic this evening in the Zara Murphy Cup round of 16.

On a great evening for football, Torro made a bright start when Erin Coughlan had a shot saved by the Trim keeper but the sustained pressure finally told when Amelie Tyndall chipped the ball into the net to make it 1-0 to the away side. Trim then had a spell of pressure but were met by great resistance from Una Uradnikova in the Torro goal, who made some excellent saves that kept Torro in the lead until half time.

2nd half commenced and Trim went on the attack again and found an equalizer. Undeterred the Torro girls found their stride and Aoibh Conlon raced onto an Emily Markey through ball to finish past the keeper to make it 2-1. Trim pressed again and found another equalizer, but again the Torro girls didn’t let it effect them and went on the attack until Sophie McGarry in the right place at the right time, found the net again to make it 3-2. This time, the Torro girls didn’t let up, Amelia Carroll with a brilliant pass set Erin Coughlan racing through, and she struck the ball off the underside of the bar to make it 4-2. Trim tried to rally but were caught on the counter attack when Aoibh Conlon once again found herself 1 on 1 and made no mistake to make it 5-2. Trim added a late goal to make it 5-3 but time ran out on them and Torro secured an impressive victory after another terrific team performance.

Torro began their run in the reserve cup on Saturday welcoming Enfield 2nds to Powderly Park. The visitors struck first and quick after some poor defending from Torro, The Enfield winger smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range and Torro found themselves 1-0 inside two minutes. Despite the early setback the home side began finding their rhythm with Evan Bird causing constant problems to the Enfield defence through our set pieces. How there wasn’t an equaliser from these was nearly baffling with Wesley McGrath, James Lanney and Scott Dowling coming so close to pulling one back. Torro still had their fair share of defending and almost saw themselves 2-0 down only for the quick reactions of the defence clearing the ball off the line.
2nd half started and it was clear and obvious that there was at least one goal incoming for the home side, and again from a dangerous set piece from Evan Bird finding Darragh O’Reilly who squared to his brother Jack and just like that Torro were back in the game in the 55th minute. The rest of what felt like an eternity of a half was a tight affair of end to end football and chances for both teams. After 13 minutes of added time the game ended 1-1 in normal time and the lads now had to find another bit of gas in their tanks in very warm weather to get through 20 more minutes of football.
Penalties seemed destined but in the 106th minute Wesley McGrath got on the end of another Evan Bird corner and put the hosts 2-1 up with four minutes to go. The victory was then sealed with Jason Nolan hitting a lofted volley to Conor Coogan who touched and volleyed into the bottom corner from outside the box. Making that eight goals in all competitions this season.
A needed victory for the lads who are through to the quarter finals of the reserve cup.
Stand out performances could go to any of the lads but James Lanney, Cian Bowens, Scott Dowling and Wesley McGrath were outstanding. 🟢🟡⚽️

Not to be for the NERL girls today as they narrowly lost out to Louth in the u12’s Interleague Shield Final in Kilkenny with the final score 1-0 to Louth. The NERL girls created lots of chances but just couldn’t make the breakthrough.

Well done to our own Aoibh Conlon who captained the team and we also had Grace, Lauren & Emily on the team. Great achievement girls.
