A day that will go down as a landmark one for Meath football.
Our first ever outing as Meath Masters, lining out in the Michael Cunningham Cup against a strong Leitrim/Longford side β and what a way to mark the occasion.
We found ourselves three points down at the break, but the response in the second half was everything youβd want from a Meath team β intensity, work rate, composure on the ball, and that bit of bite when it mattered most. Bit by bit, the lads clawed it back, turned the tide, and drove on to finish the job in style.
Leitrim are reporting the final score as 3-11 to 1-13 (though there are a few very confident voices in the dressing room insisting we rattled the net a fourth time π, but whatever the final tally, the result is what matters β a win on our first day out.
A particularly proud moment came at the final whistle when team captain Gordon Weldon had the honour of lifting the Michael Cunningham Cup on behalf of the team β a fitting image to mark the beginning of this teamβs journey. Keith Reilly put in a great performance and was honoured with the Player of the Match award.
More than the scoreboard, today was about something bigger. It was about finally getting a Meath Masters football team on the field β something thatβs been talked about for a long time and is well overdue. To see it become a reality, and to do so with such spirit and togetherness, is a credit to every single lad involved.
Huge credit to all the players who made the trip and gave everything for the jersey β the effort, the camaraderie, and the pride in representing Meath were there for all to see. A big thank you to Leitrim/Longford Masters and in particular the legendary Martin McHugh on their hospitality throughout the day.
A special word of thanks to Tadhg Boyle, who gave up his day to take charge of the team and guide the lads to a historic first victory π
This is only the beginning.
Next up, a challenge game v Kildare in Longwood on Monday, March 30th at 7:30pm.
But for now, weβll enjoy this moment.
Meath Masters β finally up and running, and proudly off to a winning start. ππ
