Meath LGFA Face Tough Galway Test in Championship Opener
Meath LGFA faced a stern test against a formidable Galway Ladies Football side on Sunday afternoon, ultimately succumbing to a 2-21 to 1-09 defeat in Round 1 of the championship.
Originally scheduled for Stamullen, the fixture was switched to the fabulous grounds of Bective Cannistown GFC who stepped in at short notice to host the game. The Bective grounds team and volunteers could not have done more to ensure the match was played to the highest possible standard. Their hard work, attention to detail and hospitality helped provide a top-class venue and match-day experience for players, officials, supporters and guests alike.
The early exchanges saw Meath start brightly, with captain Niamh Gallogly opening the scoring before also registering Meath's first-ever two-pointer under the new rules to get the Royal County off the mark. Galway quickly found their rhythm, responding with a couple of well-taken scores to settle into the contest.
Meath found a crucial breakthrough towards the end of the opening quarter when Orla "Finno" Finnegan rattled the net, injecting some much-needed momentum into the home side. Galway responded strongly with three unanswered points before St. Ultan's Rachel Casserly produced a superb score to keep just two points between the teams. Galway added another point, but Ciara Smyth and Emma Duggan, from a free, ensured Meath remained within touching distance. Both sides continued to trade scores in the closing minutes of the half, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage as the teams went in level at the interval.
At half-time, Katie Bermingham replaced Orla Smyth, while Meadhbh Byrne was introduced in place of Orla Finnegan.
The second half commenced wita strong breeze favouring Galway but Meath showed renewed intent, registering points through Ciara Smyth and Meadhbh Byrne within the opening minutes. A crucial save from Meath goalkeeper Robyn Murray denied Galway a goal, with the shot being brilliantly turned over the bar.
However, Galway's relentless pressure eventually paid off when Eva Noone found the back of the net to raise a green flag for the visitors. Despite a number of substitutions aimed at shifting the momentum, Galway's attacking strength proved too much as they continued to build on their advantage with a succession of scores.
While the scoreboard did not favour Meath on this occasion, the team showed flashes of their attacking potential and defensive resilience throughout. The experience gained against one of the championship favourites will undoubtedly prove invaluable as Meath continue their campaign. Supporters can take great heart from the never-say-die attitude displayed by the Royals from first whistle to last.
