Meath LGFA Face Tough Galway Test in Championship Opener

Meath LGFA faced a stern test against a formidable Galway Ladies Football side on Sunday afternoon, ultimately succumbing to a 2-21 to 1-09 defeat in Round 1 of the championship.
Originally scheduled for Stamullen, the fixture was switched to the fabulous grounds of Bective Cannistown GFC who stepped in at short notice to host the game. The Bective grounds team and volunteers could not have done more to ensure the match was played to the highest possible standard. Their hard work, attention to detail and hospitality helped provide a top-class venue and match-day experience for players, officials, supporters and guests alike.

The early exchanges saw Meath start brightly, with captain Niamh Gallogly opening the scoring before also registering Meath's first-ever two-pointer under the new rules to get the Royal County off the mark. Galway quickly found their rhythm, responding with a couple of well-taken scores to settle into the contest.

Meath found a crucial breakthrough towards the end of the opening quarter when Orla "Finno" Finnegan rattled the net, injecting some much-needed momentum into the home side. Galway responded strongly with three unanswered points before St. Ultan's Rachel Casserly produced a superb score to keep just two points between the teams. Galway added another point, but Ciara Smyth and Emma Duggan, from a free, ensured Meath remained within touching distance. Both sides continued to trade scores in the closing minutes of the half, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage as the teams went in level at the interval.

At half-time, Katie Bermingham replaced Orla Smyth, while Meadhbh Byrne was introduced in place of Orla Finnegan.

The second half commenced wita strong breeze favouring Galway but Meath showed renewed intent, registering points through Ciara Smyth and Meadhbh Byrne within the opening minutes. A crucial save from Meath goalkeeper Robyn Murray denied Galway a goal, with the shot being brilliantly turned over the bar.

However, Galway's relentless pressure eventually paid off when Eva Noone found the back of the net to raise a green flag for the visitors. Despite a number of substitutions aimed at shifting the momentum, Galway's attacking strength proved too much as they continued to build on their advantage with a succession of scores.

While the scoreboard did not favour Meath on this occasion, the team showed flashes of their attacking potential and defensive resilience throughout. The experience gained against one of the championship favourites will undoubtedly prove invaluable as Meath continue their campaign. Supporters can take great heart from the never-say-die attitude displayed by the Royals from first whistle to last.

Meath LGFA Scorers: Niamh Gallogly 0-03 (1 x 2pt) Orla Finnegan 1-00, Ciara Smyth 0-02, Rachel Casserly 0-01, Emma Duggan 0-02 (1f), Meadhbh Byrne 0-01.

Subs Used: Katie Bermingham for Orla Smyth, Meadhbh Byrne for Orla Finnegan, Orlaith Mallon for Rachel Casserly, Ciara Lawlor for Megan Thynne, Alannah Reilly for SinΓ©ad Murphy.

What a day... what a day!

We had just under 150 young, aspiring footballers attend a fantastic High Performance Day hosted by the Meath LGFA Senior Ladies and management team. Girls aged 13 and upwards were invited to the beautiful grounds of Bective Cannistown GFC for what proved to be an unforgettable experience.

The day featured insightful team talks from the Meath management team, as well as specialist goalkeeping sessions led by the goalkeepers and goalkeeping coach John O'Connor.

All of the Meath Ladies players were on hand throughout the day, generously sharing their skills, knowledge, and experiences with the girls in attendance. It was a day packed with fun, laughter, learning, and, most importantly, the opportunity to build lasting friendships.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise and support the event, making it such a memorable and inspiring day for all involved. The future of ladies football in Meath is certainly bright!

And if course our Man Pascal Reilly was on hand to throughout the day , capturing all those special moments, smiles , skills and memories made

Cliodhna Smith followed up with an excellent point from play, and although Cork responded through their impressive Caoimhe Horgan .Smith added two further points from placed balls to keep Meath in front.

The All-Ireland Championship campaign begins for the Meath Ladies on Sunday, June 7th, as they travel to Stamullen to face Galway in what promises to be an exciting opening-round encounter.

The last meeting between the sides came in the opening game of the 2026 Lidl National Football League in Grangegodden on a cool but dry Sunday afternoon in January. It was a day that marked the beginning of a new chapter for Meath, with several fresh faces introduced to the panel and a number of players stepping into bigger roles.

Sunday's clash offers Meath an opportunity to showcase that progress. With a blend of experienced campaigners and exciting emerging talent, the Royals enter the championship with genuine optimism.
Championship football is where teams want to be, and Meath will embrace the challenge ahead. The squad has repeatedly shown resilience, togetherness, and a willingness to compete with the very best. Those qualities will be vital as they look to make a strong start to their All-Ireland campaign.

As throw-in approaches in Stamullen, there is plenty to be excited about from a Meath perspective. A new championship campaign brings fresh opportunities, and the Royals will be eager to make their mark from the very beginning. The journey starts on Sunday, and Meath will be ready. πŸ’šπŸ’›
