Coderdojo Gorey

Coderdojo Gorey Lets get Gorey coding! CoderDojo is an Irish led, global movement of coding clubs for young people. Dojos are set up, run by and taught at by volunteers.

About

CoderDojo is a movement orientated around running free not-for-profit coding clubs and regular sessions for young people. At a CoderDojo, young people learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. Dojos organise tours of technology companies, bring in guest speakers to talk about their career and what they do, and organise events. In addition to learning to code, memb

ers meet like minded people, show off what they’ve been working on and so on. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable, kick ass experience. CoderDojo also puts a strong emphasis on open source and free software, and has a strong network of members and volunteers globally. CoderDojo has just one rule: “Above All: Be Cool“, bullying, lying, wasting people’s time and so on is uncool. To join a CoderDojo, please find your nearest one from this list, or help set one up one! A bit of history

CoderDojo is a not-for-profit organisation founded by James Whelton and Bill Liao. It was first started in James Whelton’s school in early 2011 when James received some publicity after hacking the iPod Nano and some younger students expressed an interest in learning how to code. He setup a computer club in his school (PBC Cork) where he started teaching basic HTML and CSS. Later that year he met Bill Liao, a entrepreneur and philanthropist, who was interested in growing the project into something bigger than just an after-school computer club. In June 2011 the first CoderDojo was launched in the National Software Centre in Cork where CoderDojo saw extreme success. The Cork Dojo saw people travelling from Dublin frequently to attend sessions. Owing to this popularity a Dublin Dojo was launched soon after in Google’s Montevetro building. The increasing success leading to setting up more Dojos around Ireland and subsequently around the world.

A big thank you to all our young coders. You made this Coding year so much fun and created some brilliant projects.
Thank you to all the parents too. Your love and support throughout the year was greatly appreciated.
We can’t forget to thank our brilliant mentors either. They turn up voluntarily every Saturday morning to help out the kids. They truly are a great group of people.
Last but certainly by no means least, thank you to GCS, for providing such a wonderful safe space, for our club to grow.
Have a lovely Summer and we’ll see you all in September 🏖️

This week, it is the turn of Beginner’s Adz. Introducing Adam, Mariam, Darragh, Cí and Conor.

Mariam, Darragh, Conor and Cí are all past coders and love being able to share what they learnt while here. Adam is a software engineer who recently moved to Gorey and got involved through hearing about Coderdojo Gorey. Together head up a very enthusiastic room where they introduce our young coders to more advanced coding.

Next up in our mentor introductions are Stephen and Alex who run Project Scratch.
Stephen is our Coolest Projects expert and brought home two winning coders in last year's competition, held in Dublin. Well done guys!
Alex, like a lot of our mentors, started as a young coder and now not only is she a mentor with us, she is also on the GCS Student Council!

Next up in our introductions is Eamonn!
Eamonn is our lead mentor and also looks after Intermediate Scratch. He became involved through his kids who were attending CoderDojo Gorey and he saw how much they were getting out of it. Oh and can I add he is also a self proclaimed genius (his words 😂).

Over the next few weeks we are going to introduce our fantastic mentors to you all. First up we have Molly and Jo who head up Beginner’s Scratch. Molly was actually the first child to be enrolled in Coderdojo Gorey and now leads the group. Jo brought her son along and he enjoyed it so much she decided to get in on the act and is now Molly’s sidekick!

A big thankyou to Reuben the Entertainer for putting on his brilliant show Hacked for our young coders on Saturday. We all had great fun while being made aware of the pitfalls of social media.
We’ll definitely be recommending him to any clubs and schools we know.!

Enjoy the holidays guys, and see you in September 🏖️
