Walking speed is more than just how quickly you get from one place to another. It can provide clues about strength, balance, coordination, and overall physical function. As we age, a noticeable slowing of our walking pace can sometimes reflect changes in muscle strength or mobility. The good news is that regular walking and simple strength and balance exercises can help maintain your ability to move confidently. You don’t have to walk fast to benefit, the goal is to keep moving safely and maintain the ability to get where you want to go. Your walking pace is one small window into how well your body is functioning.
