Under 16s Boys League Match Result

Rathcoole FC 4 - 1 Mourne Celtic

A scoreline last night that really didn’t reflect the overall game.

For large spells of the match, Mourne Celtic played some excellent football, dominated possession and created the better chances, particularly throughout the first half.

Unfortunately, once again, we were punished for lapses in concentration at key moments and were unable to make our own chances count at the other end.

Rathcoole took the lead against the run of play following a defensive mix-up, despite Mourne controlling most of the ball and creating several good opportunities.

The second half started poorly for us as Rathcoole extended their lead, but the boys responded well and got themselves back into the game through a well-taken finish from Anthony Eva to make it 2-1.

At that stage it felt like there was still a way back into the match, but soft goals from set pieces and runners not being picked up ultimately punished us again and allowed Rathcoole to pull away late on.

This has been a frustrating pattern for us at times this season. We’ve shown in many games that we can compete, control possession and create chances, but football is decided in both boxes.

One of the biggest goals for this group moving forward is becoming far more ruthless in front of goal while also cutting out the avoidable mistakes at the other end.

Our Player of the Match last night was Charles, who produced an outstanding display in midfield and never stopped working for the team throughout the game.

Plenty of positives in the football played last night, even if the result doesn’t show it.

Under 14s Girls League Match Result

Raheny 2 - 4 Mourne Celtic

We started the game really strong and put Raheny on the back foot for the opening 10 minutes. The breakthrough came from a brilliant throw-in by Jorja that put Emily through one-on-one. Emily got the better of their left back and finished well to put us 1-0 up.

Straight after the goal, we never let up. Jodie completely bossed the midfield while Bella and Emily caused problems all game down the wings. We went 2-0 up after 20 minutes and were cruising. Our defence dealt with everything that came their way, and just before half-time Emily completed her hat-trick to send us into the break 3-0 up.

We started the second half just as strongly, continuing to control the game. Bella was excellent attacking down the right and Emily kept applying pressure going forward. Around 10 minutes into the half, Emily grabbed her fourth goal from an almost impossible angle near the corner flag to make it 4-0.

We became a little sloppy after that and allowed Raheny back into the game. They pulled one back while we switched off to make it 4-1. Raheny kept pushing and, despite not getting much from the referee, we had to stay focused. A high looping ball came into the box and Darcie did brilliantly to pluck it from the sky. As the ball bounced in front of her, she got a hand to it before one of their players challenged with a high foot to knock it loose, allowing Raheny to score their second.

At 4-2 we had to regroup and go again. We got control of the game back and created a few more chances, but just couldn’t finish them off.

A special mention has to go to Jodie, who ran her heart out and won everything in midfield. But today’s Player of the Match goes to Emily for an outstanding four-goal performance ⚽⚽⚽⚽

Amazing team spirit from the girls once again 💚⚽

Under 14s Girls League Match Result

Mourne Celtic 2 – Bohs 2

A very competitive game today at home to Bohs, with the girls showing great determination and character to battle back for a deserved draw.

We started the game really well, staying compact and disciplined, with every player sticking to their job. Any attacks Bohs tried to create were dealt with well, and we caused plenty of problems ourselves down both wings.

The breakthrough came from a free kick deep inside our own half from Jorja, who picked out Bella on the right wing. Bella drove at their left back before delivering a great ball into the box for Emily, who finished calmly to put Mourne Celtic 1–0 ahead.

The girls were excellent throughout the first half, with our back three dealing confidently with everything thrown at them as we controlled large periods of the game.

In the second half, a few changes disrupted our shape a little and Bohs began to get more success through the middle, eventually scoring twice to turn the game around.

To the girls’ credit, they never gave up. They kept pushing forward and fighting for every ball. Eventually the pressure paid off when Emily made a strong run forward, with Molly supporting the attack.

Molly got onto the ball, rounded the keeper, and although her shot was cleared off the line, the ball rebounded off a Bohs player and crossed the line to make it 2–2.

The match finished level, but the determination, resilience, and fight shown by the team was outstanding from start to finish.

The player of the Match goes to Summer, who was rock solid as always and a dependable last line of defence throughout the game.

Thanks to everyone for the great support on the sideline. On we go 👏⚽

U16 Boys League Match Result

Lusk United 1 – 2 Mourne Celtic

Our U16s produced a strong performance to come from behind and secure a well-deserved 2-1 victory away to Lusk.

Before the match, a minute’s silence was held in respect of a close family member of our manager, Jonathan Kearns, who recently passed away.

We dominated large spells of the first half and saw Anthony Howell strike the crossbar twice, but we went into the break 1-0 down..

We responded brilliantly in the second half. Mayson grabbed the equaliser to make it 1-1, before Bartoz stepped up to score the winner with just 10 minutes remaining.

There was still time for late drama, as our goalkeeper pulled off an outstanding one-on-one save in the closing minutes to secure all three points.

A fantastic team performance from start to finish, showing great character to turn the game around.

⚽ Mayson
⚽ Bartoz
