Another great win for Civil Service footballers over the weekend. Man of the match Luke Lyon’s was in fine form, finding the net either side of the half to finish with a personal tally of 2-4. had some goal chances in the first half. Failure to convert meant Pats struggled to find a foothold in the game.

Pressure was piled on by The Service who did not let up in the second half and ran out comprehensive winners. Final score:

A game that started with a bang for Civil Service. Assisted by the wind, we found ourselves in the driving seat early on. Of particular note were two first-half two-pointers from Luke Lyons. The forward line could not be faulted as clinical finishing saw The Service mount a ten-point advantage. A defensive error around the twenty-minute mark allowed Naomh Olaf back into the game as an interception was swiftly punished by a goal from the waiting Naomh Olaf full forward. Civil Service tacked on a couple more points before a Naomh Olaf two-pointer just before half-time saw the difference again reduced to ten points at the break. 1-03 to 1-13.

The second half was a more muted affair. Civil Service opting to manage the game to stem the tide against a spirited fightback from a youthful Naomh Olaf team who had the wind at their backs. Once again midfield dominance proved to be a key factor. Full credit to player of the match, Eoin Monaghan, pictured above. When he was not marauding the skies, Eoin could be found driving forward and breaking lines as he ran at the Naomh Olaf defence. A personal tally of 0-03 contributed to a final score of 2-18 for Civil Service.

Some pictures from our win on Wednesday.

A hard-fought battle began with a fast start from Na Fianna, who opened their account with a brace of points. This was soon answered by a Civil Service point, followed by a goal which finished off an excellent surging run by Luke Lyons.

The half progressed with both sides trading points. Na Fianna were excellent at breaking forward at pace and were a consistent goal threat throughout the half. Civil Service can thank their lucky stars, or more aptly their star goalkeeper Cian McCarney, who pulled off a number of excellent saves to limit the number of goal chances converted to one before the break. Civil Service escaped an onslaught but still trailed by 2 at the break.

The second half represented a shift in momentum, as improved defensive organisation and pressure high up the field allowed the Service to gain a foothold in the game. A penalty around the 50-minute mark, converted by the reliable Darragh Kelliher, seemed to pave the way towards a Civil Service victory.

Na Fianna were not going down without a fight, however. A sideline ball directed in, long and high, was decisively gathered and finished by the Na Fianna full forward. Minutes later, when the Na Fianna No. 20 found himself through 1-on-1 with goal, it appeared the script had been flipped completely. It was not to be, however, as man of the match Cian McCarney pulled off an unbelievable point-blank save to keep Civil Service hopes alive. The advantage was with Na Fianna, but crucially the possession was with the home side, who battled on into the dying embers.

Patient build-up was rewarded with a free just outside the two-point arc with about 2 minutes remaining. The difficult free was taken by Eoin Monaghan. You might have assumed Eoin would be feeling the worse for wear at this point, having played 60 minutes of football during which he had to be temporarily substituted for a head injury. Well, if he was, it certainly didn’t show, as the ball struck perfectly and flew through the air, looking to still be rising as it bisected the posts.

The win was hailed by a jubilant John Gaffney as a famous victory. 2-12 2-11

Tuned in for the post match analysis from an upbeat John Gaffney after our victory against in Edenmore yesterday.

We started the game expecting to have nothing easy against a Monica's side who opened the scoring immediately from the throw in with a fine score from the left hand side.

The initial 15 minutes was then it for tat. Civil service being slightly more clinical nudged ahead. A penalty around the 20 minute mark carved some daylight between the sides. Some fine place kicking from Colin Power and another goal before half time saw the visitors lead 2-08 to 0-05 at the break.

Monica's rallied after half time. Surging forward once more from the throw in before tapping over neatly. The ship was once more steadied however. Man of the match Luke Conway played a key roll, both contesting kickouts and winning the breaking ball. Civil Service dominance over the midfield was once again a critical factor in securing the victory. I'm sure there were a few blades of grass that Luke may not have covered yesterday, but they were certainly few and far between.

Civil Service will rue some missed chances in the second half with clear scoring opportunities sailing wide and dropping short. On another day we would hoped to have improved on our second half tally but overall the game was managed well and we were very happy to come away with 2 points against a tough opppsition.

Final Score:
:0-8
:2-12
