“What has balancing animals got to do with phonics and writing?”

More than you might think!

We carefully choose every resource and activity in our Funics boxes. Some won’t immediately look like phonics or letter formation activities, but they’re there to help children practise the skills that support reading and writing—through play.

🐘 Our wooden animals are a lovely example!

✋ Careful hands and pressure
Proprioception is our sense of where our body parts are and how much force we’re using. Picking up, balancing and gently releasing each animal gives children practice adjusting their movements—useful for learning how tightly to hold a pencil and how hard to press.

👀 Noticing shapes and differences
Match the animals to their outlines or playdough prints. What looks similar? What’s different? Looking closely at details and position is something children also do when learning to distinguish letters such as b and p.

🤲 Working hands together
Drawing around an animal gives both hands a job: one holds it steady while the other moves around its shape.

👂 Listening and exploring sounds
“Put the sheep behind the camel.” Following instructions practises listening and remembering. You can also clap the beats in animal names or say “sh-ee-p” for your child to blend and find!

💬 Talking and storytelling
Describe the animals, compare their features or invent a little adventure together. These conversations build vocabulary and give children practice putting their ideas into words.
