I finish all of my classes with a body scan relaxation.
Scanning through each area of the body to feel the sensations in each part. I just do a quick less than 5 mins at the end of the class.
Most people love it, some don’t, but it is important.
This is why:
We spend so much of our lives thinking.
Stuck in the mental formations of our mind.
The fact that we have a body can be easily overlooked.
I have treated over the years that are completely disconnected with their body. They don’t know how to engage their muscles, they don’t know how to distinguish different sensations in their body, they don’t know what sensations mean.
And why would they? If you have never looked in, deeply allowed yourself to feel, connected with your body, how would you know because no one teaches you this stuff.
If anything we get taught the opposite. Grit your teeth and get on with it, ignore your pain, take a pill, go see the doctor, put your body in the hands of an experienced professional.
When actually you are the professional of your body, you live there!
So a body scan is more than just a relaxation tool. It is a way to gently start to feel into your body. A gentle way to notice what sensations are happening. To be focused and concentrated on the feelings and processes happening inside of you.
The more you learn to listen, the more you hear, feel and understand.
Your body is your home, try to feel it, try to love it, learn to look after it.
And often that starts with stillness, and/or gentle, conscious, aware movement.
