Weird and curious is what some of my clients thought when I asked them to bring a straw to Intuitive Pilates this week.

Why are we using a straw?

Well to experiment with the quality of your breathing.

If our breathing is slow and smooth movement becomes easier, because we feel calmer. Our nervous system is soothed as the vagus nerve is stimulated and regulated.

The minute you force your exhalation you immediately cause tension throughout your whole body. Movement becomes harder. Movement is impaired.

I even asked clients to use the straw to breathe during their Feldenkrais Functional Integration®️ lessons to illustrate how they are holding tension throughout.

The straw gives you feedback so you can learn what your breathing habits are.

So, it may be weird, but let’s be honest super enlightening!

Yes let’s talk about feet!

I’ve run many successful foot workshops over the years and have developed them further each time! You’ve asked me for another one so I’m busy sorting out the content and will confirm a date soon!

The feet and their toes are the foundation to our skeleton. They contain many bones, extrinsic and intrinsic muscles and thousands of nerves and so need to be worked like any other part of you.

Just like any other part of your skeletal structure they need to be worked to maintain their mobility, flexibility and strength.

To strengthen the arch of your foot think of lengthening your toes and dragging them towards their base so that the arch of your foot lifts. Don’t curl the toes under as this is not so effective for strengthening the muscles of your arch.

Does your big toe have good extension? You need this for walking and running. What about your toes? Can you lift the big toe with crunching your four little toes under? Can you lift your toes without your big toe?

Some of these movements are tricky and take daily practice. But doing them daily will improve the health of your feet and the effects will be felt throughout your body.

Decent footwear, ideally minimalist or barefoot shoes with a wide toe-box will support the health of our feet, so I was super excited when my new Vivo barefoot shoes arrived today!

Don’t get me wrong, I also love to wear my heels if I’m going out for a special occasion but most of the time I’m in my toeSox around the house or in flats when I’m out and about.

Having seen how immobile and dysfunctional feet can affect our movement I’ve made it a huge priority to educate my clients about how they can improve the health of their feet. And it’s never too late to start!

If you’re keen to come to my next foot workshop then send me an email or DM so we can send you details.

Why do bubble breathing at the beginning of your Intuitive Pilates class?

* reduce signs of fatigue which is usually felt in the voice as this affects our whole self;

* enhances your breathing ready for movement;

* reduces anxiety and resets the nervous system;

* when you add sound you begin to work your vocal folds which also atrophy with age.

* and it’s so much FUN!!

I introduced this on my retreat and we did it every morning.

The feedback I’ve had has been varied from “feeling relaxed” to “transformational”.

One participant told me she had no idea how beneficial bubble breathing and vocal movement is for your voice.

I have been exploring vocal exercises and a favourite Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement®️ lesson which includes vocal sound is “Equalizing the nostrils”. This had everyone rolling (literally rolling) in laughter but also had a profound effect on everyone, from a softer jaw to better skeletal organisation!

So if your child is blowing bubbles let them! It helps regulate their emotions and nervous system.
