It's time to meet the Strider! 👟
This week we’re meeting Phil, our Club Chair! He’s been a Strider for four years and has been chair for a couple of them, organising our monthly meetings (with help from Maisie, our Club Secretary) and keeping an overview of how the club runs. He says his job is made a huge amount easier by the hard working committee members who carry out their roles so efficiently. 💙
🔹 What got you into running?
When I was 18 and had just started college, a new friend encouraged me to go for a run. He kept convincing me we were nearly home, but we ended up covering an exhausting 5 miles or so. A week later it was a lot easier...
🔹 A running experience that’s stuck with you?
I got lost in Riga, Latvia, in the days before Google Maps, and ended up in an industrial estate that looked nothing like the beautiful art nouveau town centre I’d been expecting. My wife Fiona rests a little easier these days as she can track me on “Find My Husband.” Then there was also that time in Zambia...
🔹 Any pre-race rituals or superstitions?
Since doing my LiRF (Leadership in Running Fitness) course, my pre-race ritual is to do a proper warm up!
🔹 What would you tell yourself on your first run with the club?
It’ll be more than just a running club. It’s a close knit community of like minded, kind, fun people who will become good friends (and bring doughnuts).
🔹 Go-to post-run snack?
I love a nice coffee after a run, either at Nonsuch Cafe on Saturday mornings, Stennings Bakery during the week, or Lauren’s in Worcester Park. A pain au chocolat doesn’t go amiss either!
🔹 One thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
My parents were Welsh speaking, which probably gave me my love of languages (I was a German teacher). I’ve travelled a lot and always loved exploring new places and discovering nature. There was the spitting cobra in Namibia, the puff adder in Zambia and the very angry elephant in Thailand... to name but a few!
Thanks Phil! 💙💛 Know a Strider we should feature next? Drop a name in the comments.
