As we move forward with our plans fpr next season, we find ourselves at a moment of significant transition at Saltash RFC.

Our Club Secretary Mel Simmonds, Sponsorship Co-ordinator Theresa Down, Press Officer Rod Davies, and Director of Rugby Steve Down—are all stepping down from their roles.

They have all had a positive impact on the club in their time. While our players fight for every inch on the pitch, they have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, volunteering countless hours to ensure we have a club to be proud of.

Mel has been the backbone of our daily operations. From navigating complex union paperwork to answering late-night emails and keeping us compliant, providing support to all the committee, Mel has handled the administrative chaos with grace and absolute precision. Keeping the wheels turning so the rest of us could simply enjoy the game.

Rod, our Press Officer and one of our first ever players nearly 60 years ago has been our Voice and Storyteller in the 6 or so years he has been in the role.
Rod has kept our club on the map. Rain or shine, he has been there capturing the action, writing up brilliant match reports, and keeping our community engaged through the local press. His dedication provided a commentry to our achievements and celebrations, and our club's culture shone brightly for the outside world to see. This is a volunteer role we are looking to fill, if you are interested please contact us via messenger.

Theresa brought in much needed support for the club and made a difference at a time when the club was developing our work with our sponsors. Enjoy the break from the admin.

Steve took on the Director of Rugby role at a time when we needed direction and vision, leadership, and rugby intellect have shaped the rugby philosophy across the club. Steve has taken our club forwards in the chalkenges for league and cup honours as well as entering our 2nd XV into a league structure which has seen them build a competitive culture.

To the four of you: thank you for your sacrifices, your loyalty and your time.

You have left the club in a much better place than you found it.

While you are stepping down from your official duties, you will always be a part of this club's DNA. We look forward to seeing you enjoy a game from the Shed, drink in hand, without a single worry about the logistics!

Thank you for everything.

No pigs bladders to kick around this week but a red leather ball and a chunk of willow to hit it with.

Sunday at Chapel Field we take on a different challenge when we meet Saltash Cricket Club .

The Phoenixes are playing the Cricket Club's Womens Team in a T10 match (10.30am start) then the Men take to the oval in a T 20 match at noon.

The event should be a lot of fun not only for the participants but for spectators also with a raffle and a barbecue on offer.

The clubhouse is also open following the fun where all involved are welcome.

Our preparation for the 2026-27 season is under way.

After a short rest our senior players are being put through their faces to build fitness, strength and conditioning.

We couldn't do it without the generous help and support from Motion Gym and the backing of VSW as kind sponsors of the players' programme.

Thanks for the memories

The muddy boots, the ice cold showers, waiting in A and E for hours,

The cuts and sprains, the bruises too, hoping for a pass and feeling blue,

The crooked feeds, that forward pass, , the tackle that puts you on your ass,

The rucks, the mauls, the fisticuffs, Sunday mornings feeling rough,

The refs that never spot the trip, you’re going to score then let it slip,

The penalties you cry aren’t fair, dropped balls that make you tear your hair,

The dummy, side step, swerve and jink, line out calls to make you think,

The scrum’s collapsed, my, what a stink!

You’re running free, the line’s in sight. You wish you’d had an early night,

Win or lose , it’s all the same. For after all it’s but a game,

But the laughter’s never far away, the friendship and the fun,

It’s Saturday, the whistle blows, another game has just begun!

Walking Rugby group continue this Friday.
6-7pm
At the OMG, Moorlands Lane.
Bar open afterwards.

Walking rugby is a fast-growing, non-contact, and inclusive version of rugby played at a walking pace, designed for all ages and abilities to enjoy exercise and social interaction. It replaces tackles with a two-handed touch, focusing on passing, spatial awareness, and fun rather than physicality, making it ideal for injury recovery, fitness, or those new to the game.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Monday 1st June.

Our Club President Bill Ryan was presented with his British Empire Medal at County Hall by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Col. Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO along with 4 other very well deserving recipients.

As many will know, nearly six decades ago, Bill was one of the key players in forming Saltash Rugby Club from the ground up, laying the foundations that have allowed generations of players, families, and supporters to find a home here.

A Well-Deserved Royal Honour
While we have always known the scale of Bill's impact on our club and in the wider town. Bills presentation with the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to rugby in the community is a beautifully fitting testament to all his hard work.

Bill has decided to step back from his role as Club President, and we express our deepest thanks for his sacrifice, passion, and 57 years of unmatched service. He may be standing down as President, but he is, as ever the heart and soul of this rugby club.

Congratulations Bill on your well-deserved honour, and thank you for everything.
