How much weight should you lift as a beginner?

Probably less than you think.
When you're starting out, the goal isn't to see how much weight you can move.

The goal is to learn good technique and build confidence.

A good rule of thumb is that you should finish a set feeling like you could do a couple more repetitions if you absolutely had to.

Training isn't about proving how strong you are today.
It's about becoming stronger over time.

Start lighter. Learn the movement. Build from there ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธโœ…

Persistence and consistency get results!!!

Whilst this weight isn't the heaviest I've ever lifted, I've been spending a lot of time (more than I care to admit) improving my mobility and technique to make this movement feel more comfortable and I'm delighted at this effort from the other day ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ

Always room for improvement but it's nice to see progress and it's not always in the area you expect ๐Ÿ’ช

You don't need to love exercise to benefit from it!

One thing that surprises a lot of people when they join us is that most of our members aren't fitness fanatics (as much as I try to introduce exciting challenges ๐Ÿ˜‚)

They're parents. Shift workers. People with busy jobs. People who have started and stopped fitness more times than they can count.

The difference isn't that they suddenly became motivated.
The difference is they found something that fits into their life.

Most people don't need a tougher workout. They need a routine they can actually stick to. And in all honesty, it's the boring stuff on repeat that gets you real world results!

Usually itโ€™s not a lack of effort.

Itโ€™s:

No support
Trying to do too much too quickly

Thatโ€™s why simple, guided training works so well!

When you know what youโ€™re doing and youโ€™ve got people around you, itโ€™s much easier to stick with it - that's the real beauty of our wee club ๐Ÿ’ช

Here are 3 common mistakes beginners make (in my experience):

๐ŸŒŸTrying to do too much too soon...
Going big every session then not being able to function for a week โŒ

๐ŸŒŸComparing themselves to others...
Your only focus should be on how you can make 1% progress on yourself!

๐ŸŒŸSkipping the basics...
The fundamentals are how you build real life strength! Functional movements are key to life strength. There's no point in trying fancy workouts if you can't squat, hinge, push, pull or move efficiently.

Itโ€™s completely normal but itโ€™s also what holds people back!

The best approach is always the same and this is exactly what has worked at our classes:

Keep it simple - structured, progressive, programming based on everyday functional movements ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ

Focus on learning properly - teaching you the technique to allow you to function effectively in day to day life ๐ŸŒŸ

Stay consistent - this is the money maker right here!

Thatโ€™s where the real progress happens.

Yesterday I completed the CrossFit workout 'Murph' which consists of the following ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŒŸ:

1 Mile Run
100 Pull Ups
200 Press Ups
300 Squats
1 Mile Run

Whilst wearing a 10kg weighted vest (I only managed the running sections with the vest - but maybe next time I'll try the full thing with it on!)

A bit of lore for you... The workout is famous in the CrossFit community to honour Lt. Murphy who died in Afghanistan in 2005 but is widely adopted to honour all military personnel as a way to appreciate their sacrifice.

Whilst I've been doing CrossFit for a while, It was my first time ever completing this workout in all its glory and it was truly and utterly horrible... in the best way ๐Ÿ˜‚

The two pictures for reference showcase my enthusiasm and excitement at the start of the workout and the remnants of me immediately on completion ๐Ÿ˜‚
