HEALTH! Karate is an excellent form of physical conditioning. Flexibility, strength, stamina and aerobic training are all included in a typical lesson. The instruction in these classes is given in a step-by-step, easy to follow manner. They will inspire confidence and self-belief. It's not just younger people who take up Karate, many people in their forties and fifties join for the first time to avail themselves of the countless benefits that training brings. SELF CONFIDENCE! Karate is one of the best means of building confidence in children, traditional Karate training helps to prepare a child for life (the school bully, pressure of exams and most importantly, the building of self-esteem). A child's school achievement often improves after a period of karate training, due to improved confidence and enhanced concentration. An aggressive child may be calmed by the discipline of training and Karate's emphasis on self control. ETIQUETTE! From the outset, students are taught that karate is primarily defensive not offensive. During the first few weeks of training, children learn basic etiquette. Emphasis is placed on politeness and respect for their fellow students, instructors and parents. They soon become aware that good manners start with consideration for others. DISCIPLINE! Children react to discipline very well and once disciplined for a short period, are encouraged to develop self-discipline. Focusing their minds on the job in hand is important, whether it be learning a complicated sequence of moves in karate or sitting an exam at school. Many parents notice a marked improvement in levels of concentration once Karate training has commenced. KARATE FOR LIFE! Armed with their Karate skills, self-control, self-esteem and respect for others these people will grow into fine men and women. Well equipped to deal with the rigours of modern day life in our sometimes harsh 21st century world, these adults of tomorrow will become fine citizens and contribute much to the place in which they live and work for a better society, and that's well worth striving for!

Oss everyone. Hope you are all well.

As Thursday 13th August is forecast to be another very warm day, your Senseis are recommending you wear gi bottoms and t-shirts to training, rather than full gis. Please remember to keep hydrated too.

See you on Thursday. Oss!

Just a quick reminder for all our students that there is no training next Thursday (6th August). We will be back training on Thursday 13th August. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Oss

The Doju Kun is a very traditional set of “rules for the training hall” and is something that every karate-ka should know.

The photo here shows them in Japanese and in English and your Senseis would like to encourage you all to study them over the summer holidays and we will bring them into regular classes when we meet in September.

If you have any questions please ask Sensei Aldred or Sensei Haskell. Oss.

Olney T.A.S.K. Karate Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our Association founder and former chief instructor Hanshi John van Weenen 9th Dan MBE OMT last Saturday after his brave battle against cancer.

Hanshi will be missed by so many, especially the international karate and humanitarian aid communities in whose orbits he was so influential. Many of us in the Association today were fortunate enough to have been trained by Hanshi over the years and his many legacies will include today’s Senseis and their students - the Senseis of tomorrow.

Hanshi will be remembered with much love and fondness not only as a father and grandfather to his sons Haydn and Mansel and their wider family, but to the thousands of students he has trained with so much passion and dedication over the years as well as by the international aid relief communities in Albania and France, where Hanshi led many humanitarian relief missions and where he was awarded the Order of Mother Teresa by Mother Teresa herself.

RIP Hanshi and thank you for many years of training, instruction and encouragement. Our deepest sympathies go to Haydn, Mansel, Hanshi’s grandchildren, his wider family and his vast network of friends.
