British kart championship Rounds 1&2
Apologies for the essay but this weekend needs itā¦
Firstly⦠what an AMAZING experience racing in the British Championship was. By far the best championship in the UK. The whole experience felt like we had entered into the world of F1. With professional driver Media photos, interviews, etc. I even got asked to do a track walk with the camera crew which was a really cool.
The level of drivers was mind blowing. I have never seen or raced a grid with so many fast drivers. It was impossible to call a top 10 never mind a top 3. Every driver including myself had worked so hard to reach this point. Racing was hard and emotions ran high. As with all racing there are only so many steps on the podium, meaning lots of drivers left disappointed after every session and lots of tears.
Now on to the testing / racing⦠where to start?!?
Friday testing we struggled with pace and lots of bad luck. With the hard driving and aggressive kerbs we bent an axle on 1 session, Engine failure on another session and Brake failure on the last session. Not ideal.
Saturday (Round 1)
Quali ā P10⦠AMAZING⦠with the target of the weekend being a top 10 finish this was a great start.
Heat 1 ā We realized just how tough the racing was going to be. I gave it my all and by the last lap was still sitting in P10. On the last lap I went defensive to keep my position. On the last corner another driver fought his way passed which left me then off line and I dropped 3 places on the last corner. Gutted.
Heat 2 ā With confidence now at a low I started to lose my head. Hard racing and Finished P17.
Final ā Starting P16 and confidence at an all time low I knew it would be tough to finish top 10. After a racing incident with another driver I was pushed onto the grass early into the race. It was not intentional but unfortunately the other driver got a penalty, so it ruined both our races. Once I got back on the track but after 3 laps trailing half a lap behind everyone I couldnāt take any more. The emotions got to me and I came off track in floods of tears. All that hard work to not even finish the race.
We also managed to bend ANOTHER axle. To distract me from the days events dad taught me how to change the rear axle and let me do it on my own. He was responsible for checking it over once I had finished.
Sunday (Round 2)
Conditions changed over night and we hit the track for Quali with so much more confidence. Confident with the setup and we knew it couldnāt go any worse than yesterday⦠could it?
Half way into the quali and sitting P5 whilst being held up by other drivers⦠for the first time this weekend I had pace⦠serious pace. Until the last 3 laps⦠the lap times tumbled and the kart felt horrendous and slow. Qualified P21! Self doubt was now sky high and tears of disappointment.
We collected the kart from Parc Ferme to discover the rear axle was lose... completely lose meaning the last 3 laps the back end was sliding left to right and brake was permanently on! Dad forgot to check the grub screws I had tightened up!
It gets worse⦠we then got called to the stewards! Due to the kart vibrating like mad, we lost a nut off the top of the air box. This had no impact on the kart at all, however this is against the regs for the air box not being āsecurly fastenedā ā DISQUALIFIED!
Heat 1 ā With nothing to lose and wanting to show dad he hadnāt ruined my weekend, I drove hard and confident. With the most overtakes by any driver I made it up to P17
Heat 2 ā Same again, drove hard and with the most overtakes by any driver I made it up to P17.
Final ā Started P20. Gave it my all and made it up to P14. So close to my target top 10 but over the moon with P14 after a horrendous start to the day.
Well done to my mate Harry Grant for a great weekend of racing.
Lots of thank youā s required this weekend.
