🏫 Schools have the power to make active travel part of everyday culture.

When cycling and walking become embedded through Bikeability, PE lessons, Bike Buses and school events, children are more likely to build healthy habits that last into the future 🚶🚲

Creating a positive culture around active travel can also help reduce congestion, improve wellbeing and encourage safer journeys for pupils and families alike.

Cycling Citizens MK supports schools looking to build long-term active travel culture through practical support, partnerships and shared learning opportunities.

🚴 Schools can play a huge role in helping children build confidence and independence through cycling.

Learning to travel actively encourages children to become more aware of their surroundings, make decisions independently and feel more connected to their local community.

Cycling Citizens MK works with schools across Milton Keynes to help make cycling easier, safer and more accessible through Bikeability, Bike Buses, events and active travel initiatives 🌱

By joining the Cycling Citizens MK Alliance, schools can become part of a growing movement helping more children discover the benefits of active travel.

Glow rides are back! ✨

This autumn, we're lighting up the streets once again as part of , bringing people together to call for safer streets for women.

Because when our streets are safe for women, they’re safer for everyone.

👀 Find a glow ride near you and keep an eye on the map, as more rides will be added as they’re registered.

Want to host your own glow ride? Find everything you need to get involved and register your ride at cyclinguk.org/glow-rides

Cycling is not only for sport.

It can be how you get to a meeting.
How you reach an event.
How you move through the city.
How you feel more connected to where you live.

Jane’s story is a reminder that bikes can be part of everyday culture in Milton Keynes.

The more women we see riding to work, school, shops, festivals and community events, the more normal it becomes.

Where could your bike take you this week?

🚲 Could a Bike Bus help transform journeys to your school?

Bike Buses give children a safer and more social way to travel while helping reduce congestion outside school gates and encouraging healthier daily habits 🌟

Schools already involved with Cycling Citizens MK are using Bike Buses to help pupils build confidence, strengthen community connections and make active travel more enjoyable for families.

Joining the Cycling Citizens MK Alliance gives schools access to support, shared ideas and opportunities to help more children travel actively and confidently.

No bike – no problem!

Earlier in the year Cycling Citizens Alliance member, ICAEW donated a number of different bikes to support and enable more people to cycle across Milton Keynes. Research shows that access to bikes can be a barrier for people starting to enjoy the benefits of cycling.

Watch the reel from that event here https://fb.watch/JdcfnjQlNs/

Seven women’s bikes were donated to the Alliance to support one of its key goals to achieve a gender balance in cycling. Around 3 times as many men as women cycle, and we want to help change that.

The donated women’s bikes had their first outing on a community ride in Coffee Hall last week. These bikes will empower women in the Campbell Park and Woughton Community Council's area, who don’t yet have their own bikes, to get wheeling.

Thanks again to Bob Pinder and the ICAEW team. Watch this space for upcoming rides and opportunities to use the donated bikes.

If you are interested in connecting with other women in Milton Keynes join Ride and Shine MK - an online women's cycling network https://www.facebook.com/groups/671809075762986

Also watch out for the upcoming Glow Ride on 22 October. Where we will ride as part of a day of action highlighting the need for safer streets and redways and better cycle routes, especially for women riding after dark.

“I was nervous too.”

Nervous about traffic.
Nervous about getting lost.
Nervous about looking silly.
Nervous about not being fit enough.
Nervous about riding with other people.

So many women feel this before getting back on a bike.

The good news is you do not have to start big.

Start with one quiet route. One short journey. One ride with a friend. One group that welcomes beginners.

Confidence grows one ride at a time.
