Third Year 🤝 New Writing Project

Our third year degree students have just completed their first week back with us, and what a week it’s been!

As part of their third year, we’ve introduced a new writing project, and this year our students are workshopping The Debutantes, a brand new musical written by Sam Norman & Eliza Randall. What’s even more special is this is the first time the full draft of the musical has been workshopped in the UK.

Over five weeks, our third years get the chance to properly get stuck into a new piece of musical theatre writing, exploring the characters, music, lyrics and story, whilst working alongside an industry creative team of Becca Chadder, Bella Barlow & Dan Smith to develop the show as it takes shape. The writers will also be paying us a visit in a few weeks!

It’s a unique opportunity to experience what the development of a new musical actually looks like from the inside. Not just learning a show that already exists, but helping to shape one that’s in its early stages.

And after just one week, there’s already a lot happening. We can’t wait to see where they take it.

7% of our communication is actually the words we speak 👀

Our Degree Voice Tutor Gemma Boaden speaks to us about the importance of the spoken word, when so much of our communication can get mixed up and misinterpreted on things like text messages.

How important is it for you, the student, to feel genuinely seen and valued at drama school? Especially on a course so intensive as Musical Theatre.

Musical Theatre training is incredibly intensive. Students are challenged physically, creatively and personally, which makes individual attention at drama school so important.

There are more Musical Theatre courses than ever. But the real difference comes when you know what’s actually going on under the hood. It’s also key that your teachers understand how you work, recognise where you need support and know when you’re ready to be pushed further.

So how important is it that students are truly seen in drama school training?

What really makes Arts1 different? 🫶

We sat down with some of our soon-to-be third year degree students, asked them a load of questions, and absolutely loved Lara’s answer to this one.
