Your team is constantly communicating - even when they're not speaking!
In 15 years of coaching leadership teams, I've learned that what people DON'T say often matters more than what they do say.
Here's what I watch for in every meeting:
The Disengagement Shuffle: When someone suddenly needs to check their phone, reorganise their papers, or stare out the window - they've mentally checked out. Don't ignore it.
The Defensive Fortress: Crossed arms, leaning back, minimal eye contact. They disagree but won't say it directly. This is where conflicts start brewing.
The Eager Beaver: Forward lean, note-taking, follow-up questions. These people are with you - but make sure you're not just hearing from the same voices every time.
Pro tip: If you notice negative body language, pause and ask: "I'm sensing some hesitation about this approach - what concerns do you have?"
Most people will appreciate that you noticed and cared enough to ask.
