Your team is constantly communicating - even when they're not speaking!

In 15 years of coaching leadership teams, I've learned that what people DON'T say often matters more than what they do say.

Here's what I watch for in every meeting:

The Disengagement Shuffle: When someone suddenly needs to check their phone, reorganise their papers, or stare out the window - they've mentally checked out. Don't ignore it.

The Defensive Fortress: Crossed arms, leaning back, minimal eye contact. They disagree but won't say it directly. This is where conflicts start brewing.

The Eager Beaver: Forward lean, note-taking, follow-up questions. These people are with you - but make sure you're not just hearing from the same voices every time.

Pro tip: If you notice negative body language, pause and ask: "I'm sensing some hesitation about this approach - what concerns do you have?"
Most people will appreciate that you noticed and cared enough to ask.

What body language signals do you watch for in your team? 👇

"When will my business stop relying so heavily on me?"

This is the question I hear from almost every ambitious business owner I coach.

The answer is simple but not easy.

When you've built proper leadership bench strength.

True scaling happens when you've developed leaders who:
• Make good decisions without you
• Take ownership of outcomes
• Coach their own teams effectively
• Drive growth in your absence

If you're still the bottleneck in your business, it's time to think differently about leadership development.

What's one action you could take next week to develop stronger leaders around you?

If it helps take a look at this blog: https://tomrom.co.uk/blogs/f/bench-strength

Both team coaching and group coaching are powerful development tools

But they serve different purposes and deliver distinct outcomes.

Understanding these differences helps you invest in the right development approach at the right time, whether developing individual leaders or strengthening how your team works together.

Which approach have you found most valuable in your business?

I'd love to hear your experiences!

What’s the price?

It's costing in missed opportunities, slow decision-making, and talent walking out the door.

I've watched countless small businesses struggle with the same issue - the conversations that really matter are the ones being avoided.

But there's a practical solution that goes beyond personalities and communication styles.

Through my work with Harrison Assessments, I've discovered that understanding what truly motivates each team member can transform your meetings from frustrating to productive.

Whether it's Authority, Development, Appreciation, or other key drivers, knowing what makes your team tick changes everything.

Check out my latest blog post where I share:
• The 8 fundamental factors driving team engagement
• A real-world example of how this transformed a disengaged manager
• Practical steps you can take immediately (no formal assessment needed)

Do you know what drives your people?

The simplest way to boost team performance? Start with what drives your people.

In my years working with SMEs, I've seen leaders try all sorts of complex strategies to improve team performance.

But often, the simplest approach works best: understand what drives each person on your team.

Let me share a practical framework I use with my leadership teams. It's based on Tony Robbins' six basic human needs, and I've seen it transform team dynamics time and again.

⭐Certainty - These team members need clear direction and consistent feedback. They perform best when they know exactly where they stand. Give them structure and clarity, and they'll deliver consistently strong results.

⭐Variety - Watch for those who get restless with routine. These people need regular challenges and new problems to solve. They're your adaptable players - use that strength.

⭐Significance - Some team members need to know their work matters. They want their expertise recognised and their input valued. Give them opportunities to showcase their capabilities.

⭐Connection - These are your relationship builders. They thrive in collaborative environments and help build strong team bonds. They're brilliant at breaking down silos between departments.

⭐Growth - Look for people who constantly seek learning opportunities. They need to feel they're developing and progressing. Without this, they'll quickly become disengaged.

⭐Contribution - Some team members are driven by making a difference. They need to see how their work impacts the bigger picture. Link their role to your company's mission, and they'll drive your vision forward.

And because I like you 😏 here's a practical next step:
In your next one-to-one, simply ask "What makes a good day at work for you?" Then listen carefully.

The answer will tell you exactly what drives them.

Don't overcomplicate this. Match their drivers to their role, and you'll see engagement and performance improve naturally.

Simple but powerful stuff 😁😁

I have been working with a client this month who has transformed their team meetings by asking this one question at the start of each meeting.

The beauty is how it turns a potential download session into a real conversation.

I have seen how the dynamic shifted instantly.

Instead of people passively waiting for information to wash over them, suddenly everyone was part of the discussion.

Even those who normally say very little started contributing because they'd been invited to share their thoughts in such an easy way.

Here's what I love ♥️ - it sparked genuine dialogue.

When the sales guy said "good" meant walking away with clear actions, it prompted the warehouse manager to jump in about needing time to discuss bottlenecks within production.
That kicked off a proper conversation about priorities and challenges, rather than the usual one-way traffic.

I've seen this scene play out countless times in growing businesses. People don't tune out because they're not interested - they tune out because they're stuck in receive mode rather than genuine dialogue.

The real power isn't in the question itself - it's in how it shifts the energy from a presentation to a conversation.

Give it a go at your next team meeting.

Create that space for real dialogue right from the start.

I'd love to hear how it changes the dynamic for you.

What's been your experience with making meetings more conversational?

Any questions that have worked well for you?

Your team is ready for more!

I see it time and time again with growing businesses: founders and leaders hanging on to tasks “because it's quicker to do it myself”

But that is rarely true!

The truth is every time you say or do that you’re holding back both your business and your team!

Think about that for a minute……………..
Your team need a little uncertainty and variety to stay engaged, most will crave opportunities to grow and more importantly, they want to feel significant and like their contribution matters.

4 Easy tips to delegate more effectively:

• Explain the WHY – how the task connects to the bigger picture
• Be crystal clear about the outcome you want or are expecting, but let them figure out HOW
• Stay available for questions, but resist that urge to jump in and fix things
• Give feedback that helps them grow, not just criticism when things go wrong

Remember: Delegation isn't about offloading work - it's about creating space for your team to step up and for you to focus on what truly needs your attention.

What's one task you're holding onto that could be
someone else's growth opportunity?

And what will you then have time to spend more time focusing on?

Want to know the truth?

Leadership development is NOT about fixing what’s wrong with you.

Here’s what really works: Understanding your style and making it work within your business!
Simple!

⭐Hate big presentations but love mentoring? Build your leadership style around small group interactions

⭐Better at written communication than verbal?? Make that your superpower!

⭐Natural problem-solver? Lead through regular strategic planning sessions

Some of the most effective leaders I have seen or worked with aren’t trying to fit into a mold – they’ve figured out how to align their natural strengths with their business needs.

Stop wasting time on generic leadership advice.
Start building on what’s already working for you!

If you want some help 😉
