At just 25 years old, Joe Dobb is the new Centre Manager Orpington Golf Centre, demonstrating how the leisure industry can offer a compelling career path for ambitious young people.

Joe’s journey with us began four years ago after he graduated from Buckinghamshire New University with a degree in Accounting and Finance.

As a competitive swimmer for the Bromley Swimming Club, he originally began lifeguarding with Mytime Active gaining his NPLQ qualification as a practical way to earn money while he applied for graduate schemes.

However, we quickly recognised Joe’s potential. He went on to gain his Level 2 swimming teacher and coaching qualifications and was soon promoted to Swimming Coordinator at West Wickham Leisure Centre. He also gained his Royal Life Saving Society Trainer Assessor course and delivered multiple lifeguard NPLQ courses for us.

Since then, his rise through the ranks has been remarkably rapid. He was promoted from Swimming Coordinator to Operations Manager, overseeing multiple sites including The Spa at Beckenham and Biggin Hill, before arriving at his new role as Centre Manager at Orpington Golf Club.

In just four short years, Joe transitioned from the poolside to running a leisure venue. Joe explains: “I didn’t plan my career this way, but I am extremely pleased with how it has all fallen into place.

“After I graduated, I originally wanted to go into finance, but my work with Mytime Active is much more varied and interesting. Every day is different, which keeps me both motivated and on my toes. I really enjoy what I do, and there is a great team around me.

“Exciting things are happening at Orpington Golf Centre right now. We’re currently rolling out several new initiatives, including our new ‘The Green Room’ golf simulator. From tech upgrades to updating our hospitality spaces and facilities. I'm thrilled to be leading the charge through these changes. There’s lots of work to do and I’m here for the challenge.”

Steve May, CEO, Mytime Active says: “Huge congratulations to Joe on his appointment as Centre Manager. His journey from lifeguard to leading a major venue in just four years is inspiring. We are thrilled to have him running Orpington Golf Centre and we can’t wait to see where his career in leisure takes him next!”

Megan, 26, has been working for Mytime Active since she was just 17 years old, combining her love of playing golf with a career in leisure.

Megan first learnt to play golf with her dad when she was 14, and whilst at secondary school played twice a week at Hatchford Brook as part of an after-school club. Then, whilst studying Level 2 and Level 3 coaching and fitness qualifications at college, Megan volunteered with Hatchford Brook’s golf professional, teaching 180 juniors each week for three years.

After college, Megan got a full-time job in food and beverage at Hatchford Brook, which meant she could shadow the golf team working behind the golf reception. She later applied for a Wellbeing Advisor role at Pype Hayes Golf Course and Gym, and four years on combined that with being a golf receptionist too.

A typical day for Megan involves managing the golf reception, booking in functions and events, welcoming members and supporting the smooth running of the course. Her role as a wellbeing advisor involves engaging with members about their health and fitness goals and promoting activities that support their wellbeing.

Megan also sits on Mytime Active’s Employee Consultative Committee to bridge the gap between staff and management.

Megan is particularly focused on breaking down the traditional barriers of the sport. She views her role not just as a job, but as a platform to share the mental and physical clarity golf and physical activity provides, ensuring that every person who walks onto the course feels the same sense of belonging she found a decade ago.

She says: “Golf can sometimes feel intimidating to get into, especially for women and younger players. I want to be part of changing that perception, making sure everyone feels welcome and included at the club. My vision is to create a more inclusive and social environment while still supporting competitive golf.”

From childhood birthday parties to swimming lessons, The Pavilion in Bromley has always been a cornerstone of life for brothers Will (16) and Max (14). These days, the duo are in the gym multiple times a week, working out and building their confidence.

The real game-changer has been the installation of the new EGYM smart strength training equipment. The automated system takes the guesswork out of training, allowing the boys to focus entirely on their form and progress.

Max says: “I love that EGYM is automated. You don’t need to change the weights like you do with manual machines; it’s all done for you. It makes everything flow better. Since starting, my muscles are more defined and I feel fitter too.”

It isn’t just the brothers who are seeing the benefits. Their dad has watched them transition from the soft play area to becoming dedicated gym members, and he couldn't be happier with the environment. He shares: “The membership represents excellent value for money. The team are always professional and positive, and we feel reassured knowing the boys are training somewhere well supervised, with vigilant staff.”

Fifteen years ago, Sarah was terrified at the prospect of stepping into a gym. Living with the painful impact of psoriatic arthritis, she felt self-conscious and intimidated by the idea of an exercise programme. However, joining our FreshStart programme at the Spa at Beckenham via a healthcare referral, proved to be transformative in her approach to health and mobility.

FreshStart is a programme of safe physical activity for patients recovering from illness or with long term medical conditions, supported by our exercise specialists who help tailor an exercise programme based on individual goals and their medical conditions.

Despite facing significant health setbacks, including multiple surgeries, Sarah’s wellbeing journey came full circle when she recently joined our ESCAPE-Pain, a rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain that integrates educational self-management and coping strategies with individualised exercise.

Through expert guidance and a supportive community of people who truly understand the reality of chronic pain, Sarah has found the strength to keep moving forward.

“I genuinely feel really lucky to have been able to do FreshStart and now ESCAPE-Pain. They are brilliant programmes and have been so beneficial to me. It’s great to be in an environment where everyone is supportive and no-one judges. It’s immeasurable in fact, as only someone who has chronic pain can really understand what that means. The impact has been so uplifting.”

Mental health challenges don’t always have a loud beginning. For June, 65, a long-time bank employee in Bromley, the impact of the pandemic hit like a delayed aftershock.

After months of struggling with exhaustion and anxiety that left her unable to leave her bed, June reached breaking point. It was a small, courageous decision to return to an old hobby, swimming, that finally began to pull the curtains back on her world.

June recalls being ‘paralysed by fear’ at our Walnuts Leisure Centre reception desk during her first visit. But through the kindness of our team and the energy of our Aqua classes, she found more than just a workout; she found a lifeline. Today, June is a fixture in our community, attending four classes a week. She credits the swimming pool with giving her a sense of sunshine, even on the greyest days.

June’s transformation is a reminder that our leisure centres are more than just places to visit they are support systems. As June beautifully puts it: “I wasn’t really living before, I was simply existing. The aqua classes at Mytime Active have really been my saviour. I just wanted to be me again and, on the whole, that’s who I am.”
