📲 ONE MONTH IN WITH THE NEW ENTRY SYSTEM 💚

We’ve now had the new access control system in place for over a month… and quite honestly, it’s been absolutely fantastic 👌

It’s simple
It’s smooth
It works
And most importantly… it protects the atmosphere of the gym

One thing it has done almost immediately is identify a few situations where people may potentially have been bringing non paying people into the gym. Whether that had been going on for a while or not, the behaviour was stamped out very quickly.

And that matters. A lot.

🏋️‍♂️ Every single person in Alpha should be paying their way and accountable for being here.

Anyone who trains in commercial gyms knows exactly what happens otherwise, especially later in the evenings.

Groups of people hanging around
People tailgating through doors
Non members taking up equipment
Overcrowding
No accountability

That is exactly what we do not want Alpha to become.

💚 The entire reason people enjoy training here is because it remains a friendly, easy flowing, respectful training environment where you can actually get on equipment and train properly.

And this system protects that.

Just a quick reminder as the weather starts heating up ☀️

No matter how sexy you all are with your tops off, which I know many of you beautiful beasts absolutely are 😂 please keep them on while training

🏋️‍♂️ Alpha is a tops-on gym

This is mainly about
• Hygiene
• Respect for shared equipment
• Maintaining the atmosphere and welcoming environment we’ve built over the years

And honestly, while we completely understand it gets hot and people feel like taking their tops off cools them down… the reality is it doesn’t really make much difference once you’re deep into a hard session anyway 😅

Tank tops, gym vests, stringers, all absolutely fine 👌

So if you still want to show off the hard work, crack on

We just don’t operate as a shirtless training environment

💚 That decision was made from day one

The goal has always been to create a gym where people of all ages, experience levels, and confidence levels feel comfortable training

And that atmosphere is one of the biggest reasons people enjoy being here

Of course, we’ve also got towels, sprays, and cleaning stations around the gym, so if equipment ends up looking like you’ve just climbed out of a swimming pool after using it… please give it a wipe down 😅

💚 THE PEOPLE MAKE THE GYM 💚

One thing we never want to forget at Alpha is this

The gym is what it is because of the people inside it

The equipment matters
The atmosphere matters
The environment matters

But ultimately, it’s the members that make this place what it is

And Stuart and Phil are absolutely perfect examples of that 👏

These guys joined us years ago now, coming up towards 7 years, and since day one they’ve been nothing but supportive, helpful, positive, and genuinely part of the backbone of the gym community

Through COVID
Through upgrades
Through changes
Through all the years of growth

They’ve always stuck with us and always contributed positively to the place

🛠️ This weekend they went above and beyond once again

The guys brought some materials in and gave one of our older benches a bit of TLC for us

And honestly… it now looks 10 times better 👌

It’s massively appreciated because these are exactly the little things that sometimes slip under the radar when running a gym day to day

💪 Stuart in particular has helped us countless times over the years with repairs, engineering solutions, sourcing parts, and helping keep equipment going when things needed sorting

And Phil has always been the same
Helpful
Supportive
Positive
Always willing to lend a hand or offer suggestions

That kind of attitude is priceless

It reconnects me to exactly why I got into this industry in the first place.

The reality is not everybody can afford personal training and ongoing coaching support.

Life is expensive right now.
Financially, a lot of people are struggling.

🏋️‍♂️ MOVEMENT IS A PRIVILEGE 💚

One thing I think a lot of people forget when it comes to training, exercise, sport, or just being active in general

Is that being able to do these things is an absolute privilege

Being able to
• Walk into a gym
• Lift weights
• Go for a run
• Walk for miles
• Hit pads in a boxing gym
• Spar
• Train hard
• Move your body freely

That is something a lot of people would give absolutely anything to have back

💭 The reality is this

In 30 years time, there’s a chance your body won’t move the same way it does today

And one day you might look back and think

“God, I wish I could just go and do a normal session again”

Wish you could
• Pick up a 10kg dumbbell for curls
• Bench press a barbell
• Walk to the gym and back
• Go for a pain free run
• Feel physically capable and strong

And that’s why it’s so important not to take movement for granted while you have it

💪 The beautiful thing is this

The more active you stay now
The more you look after your body now
The more you build strength, mobility, fitness, and resilience now

The greater the chance that in later life…

You’ll still be able to do the things you love

You’ll still have independence
You’ll still be mobile
You’ll still feel capable

And that is one of the greatest privileges imaginable

🔥 And honestly, there’s no better feeling than walking out of a hard session absolutely dripping with sweat

Legs tired
Body exhausted

And still being able to think

“I can still put my body through this… and get up tomorrow and go again.”

That is a privilege

So stop looking at training as punishment

Start looking at it as an investment in your future self

☀️ SUMMER MODE ACTIVATED ❄️💪

Looking at the forecast, it finally looks like we’re getting those proper summer temperatures again, mid 20s and above

Which means these little bad boys are back in action upstairs 😎

💨 The upstairs air conditioning units are now back set up for the warmer months

They’ll generally kick on around 11am to 12pm and run through until roughly 10pm before automatically switching off later in the evening as temperatures drop

⚠️ Quick favour
Please try not to adjust them or press buttons on them

Last year a few people accidentally switched the air conditioning mode off and turned the dehumidifier settings on instead, which definitely wasn’t the goal 😂

They’re already set up how they need to be

🪟 Important
Please leave the upstairs windows open while they’re running

The ventilation tubes are set up through the windows and the system works best exactly as it is

💦 What they actually do
These make a massive difference upstairs by
• Pulling humidity out of the room
• Keeping temperatures manageable
• Stopping the upstairs from feeling like you’ve just stepped off a plane abroad.

And honestly, they worked brilliantly the last couple of summers

🏋️ Downstairs
No air conditioning downstairs, mainly because with the shutter doors open most of the time it would just be pointless

But we’ll get the fans back around the gym and probably add a couple more again this year to keep airflow moving nicely

SCIATICA & WEIGHT TRAINING 💥🏋️‍♂️

Sciatica is something we see and hear about a lot in the gym world

And unfortunately, it’s one of those issues that can massively affect day to day life if left unmanaged

⚠️ What actually is sciatica?

Sciatica isn’t technically an injury itself

It’s a symptom

Usually caused by irritation or compression around the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the glutes and into the legs

Symptoms can include
• Lower back pain
• Glute pain
• Burning or shooting pain down the leg
• Tingling or numbness
• Weakness in the leg
• Pain when sitting for long periods

And for some people, it can become absolutely debilitating

💡 The important part, finding the cause

This is where people often go wrong

“Sciatica” doesn’t tell you WHY it’s happening

That’s the important bit

The cause could be
• Disc irritation or bulging
• Tight surrounding muscles
• Weakness and instability around the hips and core
• Poor movement patterns
• Long periods of sitting
• Previous injuries

And every one of those may need slightly different management strategies

That’s why getting a proper assessment and diagnosis is incredibly important

🏋️‍♂️ Where weight training helps massively

One of the biggest misconceptions is that people with back pain should avoid movement completely

In reality, controlled movement and strengthening work is often one of the best long-term solutions available

Proper resistance training can help
• Strengthen the muscles supporting the spine
• Improve posture and movement patterns
• Build core stability
• Reduce pressure through weak areas
• Improve mobility and confidence
• Increase day to day function and quality of life

And importantly, it helps build resilience in the body again

⚠️ What to generally avoid initially

This depends on the individual, but common things that can aggravate sciatica include
• Heavy uncontrolled lifting
• Sudden twisting movements
• Poor lifting technique
• High fatigue training with bad form
• Ignoring pain signals completely
• Sitting still for hours without movement

This doesn’t mean you can never do these things again

It just means you need to rebuild properly and progressively

💚 The key message
The goal isn’t just “pain relief”

The goal is improving your body’s ability to tolerate life again

And for many people, structured gym work becomes absolutely fundamental to that process

Done properly, weight training can genuinely become one of the best tools available for long-term pain management, recovery, and rebuilding confidence in your body

If you’re struggling with sciatica or ongoing back issues, don’t just assume your training days are over

In many cases, the right training could be exactly what helps turn things
