Craven Pothole Club

Craven Pothole Club Active Yorkshire Dales based caving club based in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Responsible for the August Gaping Gill Winch Descent.

The Club's formal activities are organised around an annual programme of meets at approximately fortnightly intervals during the summer and less frequently during the winter months. Meets cover all the principal activities of the Club with caving, walking, and foreign expeditions suitable for both the beginner and the connoisseur. Social highlights include the August Gaping Gill winch meet and the

November AGM and Dinner. Informally, our members are active most weekends, caving, prospecting for new caves, walking and cycling, often using the cottages as a base. We publish a quarterly magazine, The Record. This keeps members informed of club activities, local and international caving news and provides the means to record the activities of club members and articles of a more scholarly nature. The Club maintains a comprehensive library of books and journals and an extensive photographic archive.

Our friends at the Red Rose club are doing another open house! Save time on your ropes and go along and see some fantastic formations and passages in this massive system! Just remember to give them a heads up if you're going underground.

A reminder that from THIS FRIDAY 5th June until Sunday 14th June, Red Rose Cave and Pothole Club (RRCPC) are running their second Ease Gill Open House event. This is a festival of caving based around Ease Gill Caverns and Bull Pot Farm, and all cavers are warmly welcomed.

Cave entrances/routes rigged for the duration are:

☑️ Top Sink
☑️ Pool Sink
☑️ County Pot
☑️ Lancaster Hole
☑️ Cow Pot
☑️ Link Pot
☑️ Pippikin Pot

Come and enjoy some great trips without any rigging or de-rigging. Loads of route descriptions on CNCC's website.

There's no need to use the CNCC’s booking system during this period (the caves are all open access anyway). However, we do encourage you to help RRCPC make this event a success by booking with them in advance if you know what day/trip you want to do. Cavers are also welcome to just turn up and visit any of the caves without advanced notice, but we do encourage you to car-share as much as possible and check-in on the day with the team at Bull Pot Farm and have some flexibility on your destination so congestion can be avoided.

There’s evening food and/or accommodation available (pre-booking only) and an on-site bar available every day except Wednesday.

We encourage you to hang around before/after your trip and socialise with other visiting cavers… bringing cavers together from different groups is, after all, one of the big aims of this excellent event.

This bank holiday weekend some of our members walked up to the Gaping Gill winch meet put on by the BPC to descend down routes where members of the public don't get to go! One group going into Stream passage and one into Wades. Met up briefly in the main chamber to then exit separately. One group the hard way and one group the quick way! Big thank you to Alan from the BPC for lending one of our members a descender that was left in the car.
Remember our own winch meet is in August if you missed out on this one, fear not, tickets will be available in July!

We had club trips last Friday, Saturday and Sunday! A busy weekend for everyone involved. From testing out new rigging anchors in High Hull Pot to squeezing through some snug passages in Fossil Pot! Some of the braver members even did a Black Book route (if you know you know) in King Pot. It's great that we have so many competent cave leaders in our club so we can run multiple trips at once but keep everyone safe and happy!

You've seen the easy way out of Gaping Gill via the winch, now imagine free climbing out of the main chamber! Last month a couple of our mighty members undertook this amazing achievement (filmed by a 3rd member) It took them 6hrs 50mins in total but definitely something to be proud of. Enjoy this short video about the history of past climbs and their epic journey to the surface! Well done guys!

Here at the CPC we do sometimes venture out of the shire to other green pastures!
This Easter weekend some of our members travelled down to South Wales to explore some beautiful caves. Including a classic through trip in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Cwm Dwr, Agen Allwedd and Ogof Draenen. And of course some couldn't resist a trip to the Big Pit coal mining museum! Good caving, good food, good beer and great company!
A big thanks to the Westminster Speleological Society for letting us stay in your lovely members cottage.
Here's to the next one!

This weekend some of our members met up at Yordas to do some much needed conservation work! Removing a fallen tree, installing a new fence around the top entrance and repairing multiple gaps in the dry stone walls around the woodland. Thank you to the CNCC - Council for the Northern Caving Community for funding the materials for this project! And a much deserved well done to all the members old and new who turned up, giving away their free time on a lovely sunny weekend to really get stuck in and make such a difference. It's projects like this that really make a difference.
