Craven Pothole Club

Craven Pothole Club Active Yorkshire Dales based caving club based in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Responsible for the August Gaping Gill Winch Descent.

The Club's formal activities are organised around an annual programme of meets at approximately fortnightly intervals during the summer and less frequently during the winter months. Meets cover all the principal activities of the Club with caving, walking, and foreign expeditions suitable for both the beginner and the connoisseur. Social highlights include the August Gaping Gill winch meet and the

November AGM and Dinner. Informally, our members are active most weekends, caving, prospecting for new caves, walking and cycling, often using the cottages as a base. We publish a quarterly magazine, The Record. This keeps members informed of club activities, local and international caving news and provides the means to record the activities of club members and articles of a more scholarly nature. The Club maintains a comprehensive library of books and journals and an extensive photographic archive.

In 1984 our member Howard Beck wrote the definitive book about Gaping Gill. This book has just been completely rewritten (well, replaced by a new book) and will be published at the end of September ( and can be advance ordered).

Glorious morning on the 'Borough, Friday 21st August 2026.
Gentle breeze, warm sunshine.
We have a shorter day winching today as we will start to dismantle the winch etc. this afternoon. There may be some showers after lunch.
It will still be wet underground - waterproofs and warm layers are not optional.

Thursday 20th August 2026
We will be running the winch as usual today.
After last night's heavy rain we checked water levels this morning and they are safe and falling.
Obviously, if there is unexpectedly heavy rain later today the situation may need review.
It is essential to have full waterproofs and warm layers. You will get wet going down the shaft (it is spectacular with the water).

After last night's rain the Beck has risen a little and is now sinking near the lower dam.
Make sure you have waterproofs.... Ingleborough has a few wisps of cloud and the sun is shining, but don't be fooled by how warm it is in Clapham.

It is a lovely morning up at the shake hole.
A light mist from the night is disappearing in the morning sun. The air is cooler. There is a nice cool breeze.
Water levels are low....(but it us still chilly in underground).

Up and ready for action starting tomorrow! The Gaping Gill team has been working hard for the last week to get everything set up! Remember to check your emails for all the information you need about coming. Bring plenty of water in this hot weather too, as there are no refreshments at the top! You can however stop off halfway on the walk at Ingleborough show cave at their small shop for ice creams and drinks. This is a ticketed event (which sold out weeks ago), no one will be allowed down without a ticket, so please don't walk up expecting to get down Gaping Gill. We'd hate to disappoint.
We look forward to seeing you all!
