Kearsney Abbey - Dover in Kent - Park - River - Lake – Café

Kearsney Abbey is a scenic public park on the outskirts of Dover, set in the beautiful Alkham Valley. Despite its name, it was never actually an abbey—it began as a grand 19th-century country house estate.

Overview
Located about 2–3 miles northwest of Dover town centre
Set within 10 acres of landscaped parkland with lakes and woodland
The River Dour runs through the park, feeding ornamental lakes
Open year-round, generally accessible 24/7 (facilities vary)

What it’s like today
Kearsney Abbey is one of the most popular green spaces in the Dover area, known for:
Peaceful lakes with ducks, swans, and wildlife

Picnic and barbecue areas
A children’s play area
A tea room/café in the restored historic building
Walking routes and open lawns perfect for relaxing

Toilet facilities also suitable and adapted toilets for disabled.

History (short version)
The site dates back to the Norman period when it was called Castney Court
The “abbey” name comes from a Gothic-style mansion built around 1820–1822 by banker John Minet Fector

The mansion was demolished in 1950 due to structural issues
Only the Billiards Room survives today—now restored and used as a café and event space

How to get there.
Train: Kearsney station is about a 5-minute walk away
Bus: Stops right outside the park
Car: Main car park available (note: gates may close overnight)

Russell Gardens, Temple Ewell, Dover in Kent - River Flowing Under Bridge

Russell Gardens in Kent river flowing under a bridge downstream into Kearsney Abbey river and its lake and park areas along with its cafe and toilets.

Russell Gardens is part of the historic Kearsney Parks area near Dover, and its landscape is closely shaped by a natural river system.
The gardens are crossed by the River Dour, a spring-fed chalk stream.

This river flows through both Russell Gardens and nearby Kearsney Abbey before continuing into Dover town and out to the English Channel.

The River Dour is a chalk stream, which is quite rare globally (only about 200 exist).
Chalk streams are known for:
Very clear water
Stable flow (fed by underground aquifers)
Rich wildlife habitats

How the river appears in Russell Gardens

In Russell Gardens, the river is partly:
Channelled into formal canals and water features (a key part of the garden design)
Connected to ornamental ponds and lakes across the park
The water features were intentionally designed (early 1900s) to create scenic terraces, bridges, and viewpoints.

Wildlife and environment
The river supports wildlife such as:
Kingfishers - Moorhens and coots - Ducks and wagtails

There will be various other wildlife visitors depending on seasons and migration as well as other possible amphibians and fish within the river itself and surrounding insects, butterfly’s and birds.

Russell Gardens connects with Kearsney Abbey with suitable road crossings and pathways also with car parking which does become full during busy times in the nicer weather spring and summer times.

Kingsdown Beach in Kent
Kingsdown Beach is a quiet, scenic stretch of coastline just north-east of Dover, near the village of Kingsdown. It’s known for being far less crowded than the main Dover seafront.

Beaches
A shingle (pebble) beach with some sand and a chalk shelf revealed at low tide
Set against chalk cliffs at the northern edge of the White Cliffs of Dover
Very peaceful and undeveloped, great for walks and relaxing
Occasional rock pools and even seals can be spotted

Things to do
Walk the coastal path toward Deal or St Margaret’s Bay
Picnic on the benches along the seafront
Explore rock pools at low tide
Try kayaking (popular locally)

Nearby
A few traditional pubs, including one right on the beach (like the Zetland Arms)
Small village feel—limited facilities, which adds to the quiet charm

About 10–15 minute’s drive from Dover

The River Lot in France flows through many towns and villages and is about 485 km (301 miles) long. It starts at Cevennes mountains near Mont Lozère in the Lozère département, it ends at the town of Aiguillon in Lot‑et‑Garonne, southwest France where it flows into the Garonne River. Home to many carp and catfish which are exceptionally large in size and weight making it an ideal place for them hard fighting fish within them currents of the River Lot, not forgetting its amazing scenery and landscape surrounding the River Lot. Also, with streams branching into the River Lot ideal for some trout fishing.
