Oakleaf Boxing Club

Oakleaf Boxing Club Oakleaf Boxing Club was formed by Eugene O'Kane in1992,shortly after Michael Curruths Gold & Wayne McCullough Silver success at the 1992 Olympics.

Derry was founded by St. Columba Colmcille in 540AD, he named it Doire, Doire Colmcille in Irish Derry) meaning "Oak Grove"
Our Club took the name Oakleaf because it is so synonymous with our city. I992 was still a very troubled time in our city, civil and political unrest was at it's height. I decided to form a boxing club,to take young people off the streets, give them a healthy & safe alterna

tive to the violence which was happening throughout N. Ireland since 1969. Our 1st premises was an old Post Office in the Bogside which closed because it keep getting robbed !!! We remained there for 5 years, and because of our success and growing membership, we moved to our present premises in Brandywell Sports Centre. The Brandywell is one of the most disadvantaged areas in N.Ireland' and down through the years has been starved of employment and modern infrastructure, such as sporting and leisure facilities. We have now received the good news that Derry City Council have finally announced plans for a brand new Sports Centre in the Brandywell which is part of a regeneration plan for the area, and we are to be accommodated in the centre with a brand new facility. Our Club continues to grow from strength to strength , with success at National, European and Commonwealth Games level. Everyone is welcome male/female, from all traditions of our divided society. All volunteers must have Child Protection Clearance. Our club abides with all Child Protection Guidelines

Well we had a couple of “bad wan’s” as we say in Derry, at the National U15/17 Championships at the weekend.
Joshua Cairns lost out on a 3-2 split decision in the final and best wishes to young Stokes. Our problem is with one judge who obviously had decided the winner by ‘reputation’ even before the first bell had sounded. Had he been focusing on the contest, he clearly would had seen Cairns winning rounds 1&2 !!!
On Friday Shaniece Robinson lost a 3-2 split in similar fashion. Again one judges tunnel vision, changed the decision of the contest. Had he given our girl one round, Shaneice would have won.
Blatant bad judging, and nothing being done to stamp this out, from our sport.
Full marks to Danni Doherty and Martin Ward who both lost out to the eventual Champions. So proud of our boxers performances who all did their very best 👏👏👏👏
