🦁 A Huge Thank You to Karen Rice 🦁

Everyone at Deal & Betteshanger RFC would like to place on record our enormous thanks and appreciation to Karen Rice as she steps away from her club duties after more than 12 years of outstanding service across two separate stints as Club Treasurer.

To simply describe Karen as “Treasurer” would never truly reflect what she has meant to the club.

Over the years, Karen became one of the heartbeat figures of D&B RFC, the steady hand behind the scenes who helped keep the club moving forward through countless seasons, challenges, events, tours, meetings, and matchdays. From finances and memberships, to sponsorship, compliance, administration and day-to-day organisation, Karen was always there quietly holding everything together while keeping the rest of us firmly in check when needed!

Her dedication, loyalty, honesty, and tireless work ethic have left a lasting mark on the club, and it is no exaggeration to say she leaves behind a huge chasm that will be incredibly difficult to fill.

While we are all sad to see Karen step away from her official role, we are equally delighted that she and Gareth can now enjoy a very well-earned retirement together, making memories in their beloved camper, spending time with their wonderful family, and finally getting the opportunity to slow the pace a little after giving so much to the club for so long.

Karen, thank you for everything you have done for the club, its players, volunteers, members and wider rugby family. Your contribution has been immense, and Deal & Betteshanger RFC is a far better place because of you.

Please don’t be a stranger… and we’ll hopefully still see you both at the bar from time to time so that we can get you a drink 🍻

With enormous gratitude and best wishes from everyone at the club.

The Lions 🖤🤍

Kent Shield Cup Final 2026

Aylesford Bulls 2nd XV 26 – 22 Deal and Betteshanger Lions RFC 2nd XV

Deal and Betteshanger Lions RFC fielded a notably young 2nd XV in the Kent Shield Cup Final, with 11 players aged 19 or under, against an Aylesford Bulls side boasting greater experience, albeit with strong emerging talent of their own.
Aylesford opened the scoring early with a penalty directly in front of the posts. The match then developed into a closely contested affair as both teams settled into their respective styles of play. The Lions demonstrated pace and fluid ball movement, utilising their youth and structured set plays effectively, while the Bulls relied on direct running, strong contact, and efficient recycling at the breakdown.
After 16 minutes, the Lions drew level through a penalty converted by Luke Robinson. Shortly afterwards, Aylesford were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card to one of their forwards. The Lions capitalised on the numerical advantage, moving the ball quickly from the ruck and releasing the backline. Robinson finished the move to score the opening try, giving the Lions a 5-point advantage.
Once restored to a full complement, the Bulls responded decisively, scoring a try under the posts. They added a further penalty and another try shortly before half-time to take an 18–8 lead into the interval.
The second half began strongly for the Lions. Jon Schermuly showcased excellent pace to break through the Bulls’ defence and score on the wing, with Luke Robinson adding the conversion to close the gap to 18–15. Aylesford extended their lead with a penalty before exploiting a defensive gap at the breakdown to score again in the corner, pushing the score to 26–15.
The Lions showed commendable resilience, with Lucas Halford-Dunn completing a well-executed centre’s move to bring his side back into contention. Luke Robinson converted once more to make it 26–22. Despite sustained effort and pressure in the closing stages, the Lions were unable to find the decisive score.
Both teams delivered an entertaining and high-quality final, providing an excellent spectacle for a well-supported crowd.
Final score: Aylesford Bulls 26, Deal and Betteshanger Lions RFC 22.
