The Wellington boot is named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, famous for defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
He was appointed Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1829, a position whose official residence was Walmer Castle. Wellington regularly stayed at the castle and became particularly fond of it.
In fact, he died at Walmer Castle on 14 September 1852, aged 83.
