Mike had a scorchio weekend out running a Learn to Trad Course with Al and Ian this weekend ☀️☀️☀️
They did super well to be focused and learning the whole time despite the 30°C+ temps 🥵
We covered all things single pitch trad:
➡️ Passive and active gear placements
➡️ Rope management with gear and feet
➡️ Anchor building options
➡️ Dismantling anchors to maintain safety for as long as possible
➡️ Abseiling with prussiks
Get in touch for more info on trad courses and to book, £200 each for two days and two people, Gower, Pembrokeshire, or Somerset 🤙
Big thanks to Martin for shadowing/helping out on Saturday and being photographer for the day 📸

A few pics from our last Fear of Falling Workshop 😍
We developed our climbers' understanding of common hazards (e.g. ledges) and managing them, gained and practiced skills of calming down in order to think clearly and make good decisions, and did a whole bunch of jumping off 🙌
As a result, we had more informed and confident climbers (despite the cold!) and one of our climbers even got an ascent of a route that they had previously not been able to do 🤩
Our next Fear of Falling Workshop is Saturday 6th June at Gilwern - book now on our website, link in bio 🤙

One method of working through the process of a hard move 👀
This process will be different for different moves, so what do we need to know to find a process like this? 🤔
➡️ What makes the move hard?
➡️ What other holds are around this move?
➡️ Which aspect of the difficulty can I most easily change using those holds?
➡️ If it's more than one, which aspect do I struggle the most with? Adjust this aspect first.
➡️ Can I make multiple levels of difficulty from other holds?
Learn as much as you can from easier methods, then try the set method again. What improved? What still needs work? Repeat the process until the move is perfect 🙌

Thanks to and for a great environment for progressions 🤙

Coach Mike had a great session with Dee last week at Herbert's Quarry 😍
We looked at building confidence while bouldering and developing processes for projecting and working moves at height. Dee had this to say about the session:
"Thanks for today, I learnt so much that I can take forward and continue working on! The 4 hours flew by and super happy to have topped out those problems without having a panic or giving up. Thank you!"

What can we do about holds being dirty and chalky?
➡️ Brush holds! Great solution, but in a busy commercial gym it requires many people to be brushing, which is not the case
➡️ Adjust expectations of the experience you will have/grade. With difficult to brush holds this is an easier solution and reinforces that grading is subjective anyway and can different people's experiences on boulders can be very different.
Let go of the importance on a semi-random number and accept the challenge in front of you 🙌

Great day out with Martin yesterday at the Rhossili Upper crags 😍
We spent a lot of time looking at outdoor movement patterns and applying these to different angles and styles, along with breaking down moves with a process focused approach 🤩
We visited some slab, overhang, and vert, with solid sends on all angles, much learnt, and all the moves done on a limit project 🙌
Big well done to Martin, I'm sure he will be doing a lot of sitting and thinking about the day (as in the picture!) to start applying these processes in his upcoming climbing 🤙
Oh and we saw dolphins, which you can just about see in pic 2 🐬

How boulders evolve over time 😱
This is an example of a boulder with slightly slopey holds that has become far harder over its lifespan 😮‍💨
Have you experienced this? How can we combat this difficulty increase? Should gyms upgrade when the holds inevitably get worse?

How bouldering sets change over time, why grades are meaningless (almost anyway), and using bouldering to train every aspect of your climbing 🙌
All this coming up in future content from us, follow to keep informed and book private sessions with us 🙏
