With it being Mental Health Awareness Month I think it’s important to discuss the role of exercise.

It’s well established that exercise can be hugely beneficial for your mental and physical wellbeing. So why can it end up making people feel worse?

I find this often stems from the gap between expectations and the realistic timeline. People end up viewing exercise as an exchange for something else (eg ‘If I do this, I’ll look like this’). While that can be true it makes the focus on the result and not the process, a desire for the result does not create change, the desire to embrace the process does.

The common denominator being that the process needs to take place, if it’s an essential part of every journey then why not make it the focus? A process driven goal (embracing the opportunity to work towards something bigger) helps keep perspective on the big picture.

I hope the takeaway is that if you struggle to manage your relationship with exercise, change the process. Find a form of exercise that you can embrace the journey and align with your goals, once you can enjoy the process you’ve already won!
