20 years to 4X my income. Then 4 years. The advice that cost me years of income.
I spent 20 years at Costco following the advice hard-working people are handed every day:

Work hard.

Stay loyal.

Pay your dues.

Wait your turn.

My income went from about $20,000 to $80,000.

Then I stopped following that outdated career advice.

I stopped measuring my value by how much weight I carried and started understanding my real wins in facts, numbers, dollars and cents.

I went from $60,000 to over $250,000 in four years.

Twenty years the first time.

Four years the second time.

That’s the real cost of waiting.

There’s a moment every hard-working person knows. You open your pay stub, look at what you earned, then look at what actually landed in your account and think, “How am I working this hard and still feeling squeezed?”

You’re the One They Depend On. So Why Aren’t You the One They Promote? You know exactly who they call when something falls apart. When the deadline is slipping, they call you. When the new person is lost, they send them to you. When the customer is upset, somehow it lands in your hands. And because you’re good at what you do, you fix it.

You knew the answer. You didn’t say it. Someone else got credit for your thought
You’re sitting in the meeting and you can already see the problem.

The deadline won’t work. The plan is going to create a mess. If nobody says something, you’ll probably be the one cleaning it up later.

You almost speak.

So you stay quiet.

You were taught your boss would notice. That was the fairytale.Your boss isn’t watching you. I know you were taught they would.

Work hard. Stay loyal. Pick up what everyone else drops. Be the person they can always depend on.

Eventually, your boss will notice and reward you.

How’s that working out for you?

I followed that advice for far too long. It made me useful. It made me dependable. It did not get me paid faster.
