I’ve always believed it’s important for goalies to learn how to fall or dive with control and purpose. Some goalies love working on this kind of thing, while others bounce off of it because they feel they should never be in that situation in the first place, but regardless I think everyone should at least have an idea of how to make these types of saves. The game is too fast and dynamic to expect to never need it.

Most desperation saves boil down to keeping your eyes on the puck and getting some piece of your equipment close to it (Hasek was the master of this), and Lincoln worked hard at this drill and made some awesome saves as a result!

Working with Bryson on glove and blocker saves in a simple drill that allows the goalie to really focus on the details without worrying about pre- or post-shot movement. He does a great job tracking the puck in these clips!

Jack with a windmill glove save on a nice stick deflection by Bryson!

This drill is extremely challenging when the shooter is in this close. It’s a great way to work on patience, reading the stick, and tracking the puck whether the puck hits you or not. Kael and Ashton both did a great job on this one.

Two awesome reps by Adam Goody (University of Minnesota-Crookston, ACHA II) during a session in Calgary last weekend. Adam is a thoughtful, detailed, and hard-working goalie who takes his training seriously and as a result always improves when he’s on the ice. Also, he came dangerously close to hitting my phone with a puck between reps!

This was toward the end of a day in which I was on the ice for 10.5 hours, which must be close to my personal record. I can genuinely say I enjoyed every minute of it, and I never get sick of being on the ice and working with awesome goalies such as these three. I’m fortunate to do this for a living and proud of the goalies I’ve worked with over the years. Even when I’ve been on the ice all day, it’s easy to find energy because of the great people with whom I share the ice. It was fun seeing many of them on this most recent visit to Calgary!

Jackson with a couple nice reps during a recent session at World Pro, with puck-handing help from Adam and Will. Love how all three goalies are taking their role in the drill seriously and focusing on precision, while also having fun and playing some rebounds.

This is a fun drill, and a good way to get goalies thinking outside the box about how to make saves.
