This Father’s Day, give Dad something to do, not just something to unwrap. 🌿

Over the years, I’ve loved seeing fathers, daughters, sons and families come together at our workshops — creating, learning and spending a couple of hours doing something a little different together.

If you’re looking for Father’s Day plans, join me Mappins Nursery & Aquarium for our Terrarium Workshop next Sunday 6 September, 1:30–3:30pm.

Or start the celebrations early with our Kokedama Workshop on Saturday 5 September, 2–4pm.

Can’t make it this weekend? MJC Botanical Gift Cards are also available, so Dad can choose a workshop for another day.

A miniature forest. 🌿

My latest private terrarium commission, designed around a small avenue of Biophytum sensitivum (Sensitive Plants) from Mappins Nursery & Aquarium

Their delicate, palm-like form creates the impression of miniature trees within the landscape, set amongst moss, natural timber, winding pathways and contrasting foliage.

Designed and planted as its own small living landscape, where scale, texture and carefully considered plant selection come together to create the feeling of a much larger world.

Freshly wrapped Kokedama 🌿

A few of the beautiful plants I’ve been wrapping into Kokedama this week — each bringing something quite different in foliage, texture and form.

🌸 Phalaenopsis Orchid — elegant flowering stems and a beautiful contrast against the moss-covered ball.

🌿 Alocasia ‘Silver Dragon’ — highly textured, silver-toned foliage with striking dark veining.

🌿 Rabbit’s Foot Fern — delicate arching fronds and distinctive furry rhizomes that add another layer of texture when wrapped in live green moss.

🤍 Snow Queen Pothos — heavily variegated cascading foliage with beautiful white and green marbling.

Individually wrapped and finished by hand, Kokedama transforms the plant into a sculptural living piece that can be displayed on a surface or suspended.

A miniature world under glass 🌿

This new large terrarium cloche brings together some of my favourite plants to work with — jewel orchids, delicate leafless orchids, miniature orchids and layers of living moss.

Each plant has been carefully positioned to create a naturalistic forest landscape, playing with height, texture and form while allowing the extraordinary detail of these tiny orchids to take centre stage.

Step into the fascinating world of habitats and create your own miniature ecosystem at this Sunday’s workshop 1.30 - 3.30 pm Mappins Nursery & Aquarium

Together we’ll design a beautiful landscape that combines land, water, rock and carefully selected plants to create a thriving environment suitable for snails, shrimp or small fish (or simply enjoy it as a stunning planted display).

You’ll learn:
• How to layer and build a balanced habitat
