Winter kayaking 2026
Winter is a great time to build/refine your paddle technique on flat water so you can apply plenty of power in the waves come Surf season. We like to take our juniors into the winter program as they leave their U14 season and move into their U15 season – this gives 2 winters learning technique before they are racing skis in their bottom age U17 season.
We strongly urge 2025-26 U15s to have a winter in the kayaks before starting on skis in the ocean. Time and again, those who don’t have a winter in kayaks are left behind struggling to master paddling skis in waves. This is not good for competition and it can impede the squad’s training (including ski damage).

In terms 2 and 3, we will paddle Wednesdays at the Merri River Kayak Club in kayaks. Arrive no later than 4:15pm to get set up.
We leave the river bank at 4:30pm. Pick up 5:45pm.

Cost for Juniors; $95 (annual membership) Boats, paddles and PFDs provided. Warning; the toilet is primitive. Change rooms non-existent!
There is a family discount for the 3rd+ members.
Full length thermals, booties and a beanie will see you through the coldest evenings very comfortably. A towel and warm dry jacket to change into at the end makes it more comfortable.
