Introducing the Footloose Max, our latest sail, with the new SoloReef system.

Designed in a collaboration between Rob Mercer and master sail-maker Neil Tasker, the Max is a high performance sail that brings maximum wind power without producing an unsteady ride.

Whilst the sail area isn't technically much bigger than the acclaimed Footloose 0.8m sail introduced in 2019, the subtleties in the overall shape and belly of the design produce a strong and stable drive.

It'll be hugely popular with kayak sailors who prefer to sail in winds that traditionally aren't strong enough to give much assistance, while for the alphas it'll provide a high octane ride in winds up to 20-25kn, and a solid platform for the expeditioner in fully laden kayaks.

It's our first sail with an integrated reefing system, the SoloReef, which allows the paddler to reef the sail from the cockpit while underway, as opposed to having to tie knots in eyelets, which isn't practical in moving water.

Available in our tradition Black and Red trim options, as well as the new Super Vis Orange for added visibility out on the big blue.

We think this will be our biggest selling sail yet, building on the huge popularity of the Footloose range.

Bernard Robinson has mounted a Footloose 80 to his stunning wood-strip canoe 'Woody'.
With a couple of small mods to position of the uphaul and sheet cleats, he's ready to go.
Just brilliant.

A really lovely note today from Tony in South East Queensland, having bought and mounted a Footloose 80 sail on his Santee Tandem Kayak.
"Hi Guys
I’m not one who usually writes reviews….. but ...
I’ve now had a Footloose sail attached to my Santee tandem kayak for over 6 months.
Added a rudder to the craft and I add weight ballast in the bow, when out solo.
Been out in the lightest of breezes up to 12/15Knts ( with 20knt gusts ) often coping with strong tidal flows.
I’m very impressed.
Thought you might appreciate the thumbs up.
Feel free to use photo for promotion.
( Location - Sandy Beach, Russell Island,Southern Moreton Bay QLD)
Cheers
Tony"
Not the typical type of craft on which our sails are mounted, but proof of the versatility and simplicity of Mick's timeless designs.
Thanks Tony!

Harness the Wind - DIY Project - Flat Earth Kayak Sails

Here in our part of the world, August brings a steady stream of wind, ideal for a downwind burn with a kayak sail. In as little as a couple of hours messing about with your kayak you could harness that breeze and get out and have some serious fun.

Flat Earth Sails are an Australian designed and hand-crafted product with a proven track record over decades, all for the cost of a cheap Chinese carbon paddle.

Our guide to fitting Flat Earth Sails is below, and we have plenty of stock on the shelf in all models, including the powerful new Footloose 70. You can order at https://flatearthkayaksails.com.au

Limited Edition 'Shower Curtain' Footloose 80 Sail - $599

Thanks to continuous lobbying from several pioneering Tasmanian Sea Canoeists, we've bowed to the groundswell of demand and released this awesome Footloose 80 sail, paying homage to the original kayak sailors and their favoured shower curtain materials.

Whilst the original racy graphics on those '70's design shower curtains aren't fit for reproduction in this more enlightened era, we think we've managed to find retro fabrics to reflect the taste and fashions of the time.

Whilst these won't perform particular well as an actual sail in comparison to the modern mylar and technical fabrics of the current day, they are still something any proud kayak sailor would be proud to haul up in a decent blow. A cursory glance at a chance meeting with local Marine Rescue resulted in a resounding 'thumbs up' for safety and visibility.

We have only 3 of these collectors items available, and you can order through our online store.

Get in quick, these will never be repeated.
