Headleys Rods Headleys Rods are hardcore hand built fishing rods that are designed and constructed with your input.

Every rod built is as much a work of art as it is a functioning fishing tool.

Juto's Quiver

I recently finished a set of line class rods for Juto that I am really stoked on. The 1,2 and 3 kg rods are built entirely on Samurai premium blanks. New blank range that I really like as they are super crisp in action and suit their applications. These rods are very light with fuji graphite reel seats and gimbals. The guide trains feature all Fuji Sic guides that are super slick and almost friction free. Ive used the new low profile K series casting guides as the stripper and control guides followed by a progression of KT guides to do the job on all of these rods. Handmade EVA and cork grips that are made to measure and finished with alloy bling that adds protection and bling at the same time. Back stop nuts added to the reel seats for peace of mind, exotic threadwork and halfway marks incorporated into the rod design takes these rods to the next level.

I thought I would show the process involved in building cork grips. I start with rings of imported extra grade cork, from a supplier in Portugal. The first pic shows the rear handle assembly glued up on the rod blanks using jigs to ensure there are no gaps between the individual rings and the centre trim details. The centre trims are made by cutting differing width pieces of coloured cork rings and then glueing them together with the rest of the cork rings.

The front grips I usually build independently using 3/8 threaded rod with washers and wing nuts either end and cover the rods thread with candle wax to prevent the finished grips from sticking to the rod. The wing nuts and washers enables me to keep pressure on the grips until theyve dried. I then ream the grips to the correct size to the blank and glue. The last step is to sand and shape the grips using multiple different papers to the final shape and finish.

A lot of work is involved in the process but the end results speak for themselves. These grips will last for ages, wont pit and will stand up to a lot more punishment than the s**t you get from factory rods.

Why is cork such a good grip material? - the answer is vibration transmital. The better the grade of cork the better vibrations are transmitted to the angler :)

The Fast Switch - Coopers new 15 Kg Bluewater Spin.

Cooper hit me up for a new switcher for this year’s billfish season. He wanted a similar rod to the ones I built for NBSFC's 2024 Billfish Shootout that featured leather foregrips.
This rod has been built on a Samurai blank and features a Fuji K Series Sic guide train with matching tip in the new shiny grey adonisation colour. The gimbal, reel seat and alloy bling bits are all from ALPS, handmade leather foregrip with Australian leather and a wild style Urushi decorative wrap using New Zealand Paua shell sends this rod into the stratosphere.
Cooper wanted a blue them and cause he loves his Saltiga’s so I used a translucent Saltiga blue as the under bind on all the guides to tie in with his Expedition 5500. A lot of time was spent on thread work on this rod and in particular the leather grip front and rear ramps where I’ve added highlights that match the paua shell used in the Urushi.

A very stunning looking rod that fishes as hard as she is sexy. Cooper has already belted 30 odd billfish :)

Tommys PE4 Deep Jigg

This is the fourth rod that I have built the Eaton family and certainly not the last. This rod is a weapon and will go hard and really and turn heads down deep. She's built on a Samurai PE4-6 deep jig blank that I chopped to 5'6. Durabutt rear hard grip with ALPS anodised gimbal, reel seat and bling bits. Custom shaped from EVA game grip and the Fuji guidetrain.

Not just any guidetrain though. Ive had my first crack at using Fuji's new MC guides and they rock hard. Super easy to bind, super strong and less impact on the blank means the blank reacts better under all conditions. If your looking for an overhead build these are the guides you want.

I love the chosen colour scheme and how the colours work together to create something so uniquely different.

Thanks for the repeat business Tommy and enjoy the hunt.

SOLTYS Stick

The first rod for the year is now finished.

I have been promising Mick for ages to build him an acid wrapped bottom bouncer and I finally ran out of excuses and got the job done. The PE 3/4 blank was chopped at 5'6" and built up using a combination of Fuji components that starts with the graphite gimbal and matching reel seat and a complimenting set of SIC guides and tip.

Mick is a Bulldogs nut and as such it was a no brainer that this rod reflects his passion for his team. The red white and blue club colours was used in every aspect of this rods design starting with the rear blue grip with "Dogs" colour inlays and hand shaped game foregrip with the same inlays. The colour scheme then continued through the binding of the guides and tip.

Looking forward to a fish with you at Onslow Mick and watching this girl do her thing - smash good fish :)

The Tim Tam

Geoffo and I have talked about building a tribute rod to Tamiya for a couple of years and it finally came to fruition. The rod had to be purple and pink, had be glittery and have a unicorn theme.

I was so stoked to have a build so bizarre and be able to use my creative skills. I did the rounds of a few local newsagency's and craft stores and ended up with some sexy purple glitter and a heap of different unicorn sticker books.

All the dream Fuji components were used in this build with an all SIC guide train, DPSH reel seat and matching gimbal, custom pink and purple grips and some extra bits of bling. Design wise each guide has been wrapped in different colours and I have used a variety of stickers applied through different stages of finishing.

For the butt wrap I started with a layer of purple thread and then applied 2 pac finish that I tinted with purple glitter. I then applied the various unicorn stickers at different stages of finishing. This gives a real depth of image. I included some personal messages from Geoff and the family and the job was done.

Its such a buzz to be able to bring joy to people through what you do.
