Tasmanian University Rugby Union Football Club Go Red Men and Red Women! It has a proud and storied history, winning numerous premierships and having many great players pull on the Red Men jersey.

The Tasmanian University Rugby Club is based in Hobart, who fields teams in both of the Men's and Women's competitions affiliated with the Tasmanian Rugby Union. The Tasmanian University Rugby Union Football Club, known as the Red Men, was established in 1933 and recently celebrated its eightieth anniversary. In 2013, the University Mighty Twos defeated Taroona in the grand final to win the reserv

e grade premiership. The club is based out of the rugby ground at the UTAS Sandy Bay Campus, along Sandy Bay Road. Training is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm, with the clubrooms and bar being open throughout the evening. New players are always welcome so come down and join the Red Men for season 2022! Although the match was forfeited due to Glenorchy's low numbers, resulting in another win for the UniQueens, it was fantastic to see both teams still turn up and make a game of it.

The match itself was played in great spirit. Glenorchy gave everything they had despite having no substitutes. Their effort and determination never dropped, and they made it a genuine contest from start to finish.

For the UniQueens, it was pleasing to see the team put into practice the work they have been doing at training. The girls have had a strong few weeks on the training paddock, and it showed on the field. They played with structure, confidence, and a willingness to work for each other. As coaches, it's rewarding to see the effort invested during the week transferred into match day performances.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing our junior player, Rhiannon (Roo), step onto the field for her senior assessment. Congratulations to Rhiannon on a fantastic effort and passing her senior dispensation! While she may have been nervous before kickoff, once she got onto the field those nerves quickly disappeared. She tackled hard, was involved in every breakdown, and showed great determination throughout the match. It was also wonderful to see the encouragement and support she received from her teammates and players from both clubs.

Looking ahead, we're excited about the future, it's fantastic to see the strength of our junior program this year. The development of these young players is vital for the future of women's rugby, and we are proud to provide opportunities for them to grow and succeed at the next level.

Next week we look forward to taking on Eastern Suburbs. Matches against East are always enjoyable, and we know we can't take anything for granted. East always bring plenty of determination and competitive spirit, so we'll need to be at our best.

Despite being short on numbers this week due to illness and injuries, the UniQueens showed great determination and resilience, taking the field with 10 players with one substitute available. The team trained well during the week and carried that preparation into the match, starting strongly with good structure and commitment to their game plan.

A special highlight was seeing one of the Harlequins Junior girls Alona Roberts step up into the Women's team. She took charge in the backline with confidence and had a debut to remember, scoring her first try through a brilliant kick and chase effort. It was fantastic to see her transition into women's rugby and make such an immediate impact.

While we didn't come away with the win, it was always going to be a tough challenge against the top team in the competition. There were plenty of positives to take from the game, and the UniQueens continue to show growth and determination. We know there is still plenty to work on as we move forward through the season, but the effort and commitment shown by the team cannot be questioned.

The UTAS Lions men were back in action on Saturday after a couple of weeks off, coming away with a solid 30–26 win over Taroona at home.

The wet conditions made for a physical, hard-fought game, with the contest remaining close throughout the afternoon. The Lions forwards performed well, building phases and working hard to score a couple of well-earned tries.

Brancher had a strong kicking game both from the tee and in general play to help keep the team on the front foot. Ian crossed for two tries, while Benji impressed again in just his second game, making his presence felt all over the field with his work rate in the rucks and tackles.

The Lions were able to finish strongly, scoring a late try with 4 minutes to go to secure a great result in front of the home crowd. 🦁❤️🖤

After a week off across the state, both our senior sides are back in action tomorrow.

The UniQueens turned up in strong numbers for Round 4 for a Quins home game against Taroona Penguins. The girls put together an outstanding firsthalf performance, showing plenty of determination, resilience, and teamwork against one of the competition's strongest sides.

It was a tightly contested opening half, with the UniQueens matching Taroona point for point to head into the break locked at 19-all. The team showed great commitment in chasing hard, carried strongly, and the forwards worked tirelessly in the scrum.

Our scrum was a real highlight during the first half, with the Uni Queens winning several important contests and providing a solid platform for the team.

Taroona gained the upper hand in the second half, but the girls never stopped fighting. While this was our first loss of the season, there are plenty of positives to take away and valuable lessons to build on moving forward.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was seeing our newer players continue to develop and grow in confidence. Their willingness to learn, attend training, and put themselves on the field each week is a huge positive for the team and shows the bright future this group has ahead of them.

UniQueens hit the road to Burnie for the Women’s Magic Round, where they faced off against Launceston in what turned out to be a tough and physical game.

Coming into the weekend, player numbers had been uncertain throughout the week. In true UniQueens spirit, the coach stepped onto the field to support the team and help make sure the girls could take the field strong. It proved to be a successful move, with UniQueens digging deep and coming away with the win.

It was a hard-fought match from start to finish, with the forwards working tirelessly all game. The pack continued to crash the ball forward and create opportunities out wide for the backline to attack.

With our new debuts still rolling into the side, the new girls did an amazing job on the field and continued to grow in confidence throughout the game. A standout performance came from debut player Lesieli, who crossed the line for an incredible four tries in her first ever game for UniQueens.

The Women’s Magic Round was a fantastic weekend for women’s rugby, with a great turnout from clubs across the state. To finish the day, players combined for a 15-a-side match featuring teams from the South, North, and North West, which was great to see and a perfect way to wrap up the event.

A big thank you also goes to our bus driver Ashton, our supporters, and management staff Erika, Katharine, and Chris for assisting on the sideline with coaching and support throughout the weekend. Thank you to everyone who travelled on the bus and supported the girls over the weekend your support means a lot to the team.

We now look forward to taking on our neighbours, Taroona Penguins, this Saturday. It’s always a tough match against Taroona, but we’re confident our UniQueens girls will give it everything and fight hard to come away with another win. The Lions men delivered a dominant performance on the weekend, coming away with a 43–0 win over Eastern Suburbs. It was a slow start, with the side taking their time to settle into a rhythm. Towards the end of the first half the combinations started to click, and they began playing some solid team rugby.

Finding their groove, the Lions carried that momentum into the second, scoring four tries after the break. The teamwork across the park stood out, with the side working hard for one another to control the game.

Lots of players stepped up, with Jeremy bagging two tries, Pablo scoring his first and Benji impressing with a standout debut performance!

Ben Hunter also had a huge game, landing tackle after tackle throughout the full 80 and putting in a strong performance. With contributions coming from everyone on the field, it was a solid all-round team display.
