With six clubs across Melbourne in 2026, we welcome new players of any age or experience level. Rope Quoits is a low cost social and competitive game for the whole family, so why not give rope quoits a go - family fun and competition

Did you know? Records tell us that Rope Quoits was played extensively throughout Britain as early as the 15th century and was introduced by early settlers to Austral

ia at many mining centres. The Australian Rope Quoits Council was formed in 1947 as the controlling body and to standardize equipment. There are Rope Quoits Associatons throughout Victoria competing in the Singles and Teams Championships. The oldest registered player and still playing is 86 and the youngest is only 6. World Record: A throw of 4002 unfinished by Bill Irby of Melbourne in 1967. Bill Irby passed away January 1983 and won the Australian Open Singles Championships 6 times from 1967 to 1982. It has been a journey, however, we have now successfully completed our inaugural set of rope quoits. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Murray Whiteway for sharing his expertise, which greatly facilitated our progress.
Although we still have considerable ground to cover to match his level of quality, we are pleased with this initial achievement.

Great work Dean Iovenitti

We regret to inform our Rope Quoits Family of the sad news that John Sproat passed away yesterday
May 30th.

John started playing quoits at about the age of 12.
He played with the League until it folded in the 70’s.
John then came to play with The Wanderers Quoit Club after The League had folded.

John represented the Melbourne Rope Quoits Association at the Australian Quoits Championships for many many years in both Singles and Teams.

John has been an Australian Singles Champion Multiple times.
Been in the Australian Team multiple times as well.
Has won highest breaks during the Championships.

John has thrown over a 1000 quoits in one shot probably a few times over his years of quoits in Championships and Tournament while playing in The League, Australian Championships and The Melbourne Rope Quoits Association.

John was a champion of champions.
A true gentleman who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

We send our deepest condolences to John’s Family,
Lisa, Craig, Simone, and their partners and their children.
Together again with his loving wife Jeanette.
