Meet Veronica, one of our wonderful Coombs parkrun community members. Thank you Veronica for sharing your story with us.
A few friends and I had heard about parkrun so we went together to try it out. Having a reason to go for a walk or jog and have a chat was appealing. I came to find that I liked that parkrun was there if I was keen but I also wasn’t letting anyone down if I didn’t go for a while. I was grateful that the community organised it consistently and parkrun was always available when needed. So when my brother and running friends reassured me that volunteering at parkrun was easy I was pleased I too could contribute to the Coombs community. 🏃♀️🚶♀️💬❤️🤝
I started with the simple role of marshal as I figured I could arrive a little earlier, cheer people on as they rounded the course, and let the public know parkrun was happening. The volunteers were well organised so it was straightforward and a fun morning. I gradually tried more of the other roles and I’ve now volunteered 53 times in 11 different roles at 12 locations. The other volunteers are always a friendly helpful bunch so they make it a positive start to the weekend. 📣👏😊🎉🌞
I find the novelty of parkrun challenges and going to different parkruns around Canberra keeps me engaged in going more regularly and I’ve now run/walked parkrun 167 times at 23 locations. 🗺️🏅👟
I like the Coombs course because you never know what wildlife you might see by the river and I get to relax on a Saturday morning and have a chat with the local people I’ve gotten to know. I recommend parkrun to folks who haven’t been because it has helped my physical health, built social connections and it feels good to volunteer. 🦆🌿☀️💬💪🤗❤️
