NPL NSW State Cup Wrap 🌯🥈Round 7 saw our National Pickleball League D2 teams play a knock-out style competition to round off the regular season.

Without the season MVP Monique and Captain Robbie our Canberra Comets came from behind in the semi-final mixed doubles decider against Aggies to make the finals.

Both Alexis & Jarred came big in singles to force a decider in the finals coming from 2-nil down against the Stingers.

The Stingers proved too good with the experienced Ryan Morris getting it done 22-19 in the mixed doubles deciding tie 👏

With Stingers & Comets qualifying for the finals it was only fitting we got to face off before Melbourne. Who knows maybe we can meet each other in the Gold Medal match in Melbourne?

I want to thank and congratulate our reserves Matias Garcia & Alexandra Howieson for not only making their debut but getting some clutch wins. I’m so happy the Comets could give you your debut ✨

Coaching Corner: Clutch moments 🧠

A set and 7-10 down, couple match points saved and not much luck going our way… You know when experience shines through✨

Ryan Morris has played hundreds of matches and the way he managed these high pressure moments was a Masterclass - I was lucky to have a front row seat 🍿

I want to illustrate how a game can turn on its head after a few clutch points 🧊

🔴 8-10 (1): Survive, the odds for us to win the point after getting pushed back and attacked is 10% but all those reset reps in practice allowed us to get one more ball back. Not only did we reset many balls, moving into transition when the opportunity arose forced the error - A bit of gamesmanship with the big out point so they knew they missed it 🤭

🟠 10-10 (2): Bide your time, wait for the opportunity to attack. This is where all the matches Ryan has played come into play. Many players would panic forcing a speed-up or over playing a ball but Ryan understood the moment waiting until a ball was over net height before a calculated attack to get our serve back.

🟢 10-10 (1): With the opportunity to score and go ahead in the set we wanted to apply pressure. Wanting to win the point rather than hoping our opponents would miss was the mantra. It could of been seen as reckless but we had momentum so we wanted to make our presence felt 🦁

We ended up securing the set and came strong in the third to win gold 🥇

Regardless of the result you learn so much from these moments and for us players who cannot play as many events as Ryan it is more important to use every time on court as a learning opportunity.

See you in Melbourne National Pickleball League ☄️ With the conclusion of the pool matches the Comets along with the Stingers will be your NSW Conference representatives in the the 2026 NPL Final D2 Series at the end of August.

Being a Canberra-based team our players took their professionalism to the next level. This includes organising sponsors to help lessen the financial burden and sacrificing some family time by traveling a day early so there was no excuses of travel fatigue on game day.

Although we had the choice to use players from the entire NSW reserve list when one of our players were injured/away, we made a conscious decision to only use ACT players as reserves - demonstrating the depth we are building here in the Territory.

This is now the second time (out of 3 seasons) our Canberra-based team has qualified for the NPL D2 final series. With the quality of players emerging out of our big sister State we are definitely holding our own down here in the Capital 💙💛

I want to thank all our supporters, it’s great to hear some many people were following our season.
