A little shipping update. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
From 1 October, our online shipping rates will be changing.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Since The Bearded Hound first started, we’ve never increased our shipping prices. During that time, Australia Post postage costs have increased year after year, and we’ve continued to absorb those increases.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Unfortunately, we’ve reached the point where we can no longer absorb all of the additional postage costs, so from 1 October our shipping rates will be based on your order value:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Under $40 — $10 shipping⁣⁣
$40–$69.99 — $12 shipping⁣⁣
$70–$99.99 — $15 shipping⁣⁣
$100+ — FREE SHIPPING⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Free shipping is staying Our free shipping threshold will simply move from $75 to $100.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There will be no change to our free local 2795 postcode delivery structure. ⁣

The new rates will apply automatically to online orders from 1 October.⁣⁣

Thank you for your continued support of our small business. We really do appreciate every order.

This is one of the questions I use to help me come up with some options when someone wants me to recommend something for their dog.⁣

There are a few reasons I ask it.⁣

Some dogs are chop, chop, swallow. They’ll chew something just enough to get it into a size they think they can swallow and then down it goes. With those dogs, appropriate sizing becomes really important because I don’t want to recommend something that’s going to increase the risk of them trying to swallow a large piece.⁣

At the other end are dogs that simply don’t want to work very hard for their chew. Give them something too big or too hard and they might have a little go at it, leave it for later or take it and bury it, often in the couch or under a pillow.⁣

This behaviour doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t like that particular treat.⁣

For example, if a small dog is given a whole pig ear, eats part of it and regularly leaves the rest, I might suggest trying a quarter pig ear or a smaller chew next time. Then see what they do with it. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of finding the right size and hardness for that dog.⁣

Sometimes there’s another reason a dog is eating quickly too. Some dogs seem to think they need to finish their treat before someone takes it away. That might be another dog, but it can also be a person. If another dog being around is causing them to rush, separating them while they’re having their treats can help. Either way, it’s something I want to know about when I’m deciding what size and type of chew I’m comfortable recommending.⁣

For a dog that genuinely likes to chew and takes its time, we have a lot more options. Then we can start looking at whether you want something softer that’s going to be eaten relatively quickly or something harder that they’re going to have to work at for longer.⁣

It’s why I don’t choose a chew based on the size of your dog alone.⁣

The right size and hardness depend on the dog that’s actually going to be eating it — and sometimes you need to try something, watch what they do with it, and adjust from there.⁣

A couple of months ago at a market, a customer came to see me about her puppy.⁣

She’d bought some chicken training treats from a major pet retailer. When she used them, they seemed to upset the puppy’s tummy.⁣

The first thing I asked was whether the puppy had an allergy to chicken. The answer was no.⁣

We talked briefly about the treats she’d been using and the fact that, although they’re sold as chicken treats, chicken isn’t the only ingredient. There can be other ingredients added to create the shape, texture and consistency of the finished treat.⁣

That’s very different to how we make ours.⁣

Our chicken products are 100% Australian chicken. That’s it. Absolutely nothing added.⁣

She decided to take a bag of chicken breast home and see how the puppy went.⁣

The following month she came back to the market. The puppy loved them, she’d had no problems with an upset tummy, and this time she bought our biggest bag.⁣

Now, that doesn’t mean every dog with an upset tummy has a problem with additives, or that our chicken is going to suit every dog.⁣

But it is a really good example of why knowing exactly what you’re giving your dog matters.⁣

One of the things I’m really proud of with our treats is that there isn’t anything to hide. What it says on the bag is what is in the bag.⁣

This is a common question I get asked at markets, and the truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.⁣

I can’t tell you what I’d recommend until I know your dog.⁣

I start by asking a few questions.⁣

How old are they? What are their teeth like? Do they actually chew, or are they more likely to inhale it?⁣
Do they have a favourite protein? Do they have any allergies or anything they can’t have?⁣

Then, what are you actually looking for? Something for training and rewards, or something for them to chew on for a while? Are you looking for a chew to help clean their teeth?⁣

Are you comfortable giving them bones, or are you concerned about them swallowing something whole?⁣
The answers to those questions start to narrow down what I would — and wouldn’t — recommend.⁣

Two dogs of the same breed, age or size can need completely different things. That’s why I don’t have a standard answer when someone asks me what they should get for their dog.⁣

I need to know your dog, how they eat, and what you want the treat to do before I can point you in the right direction. I can’t tell you what I’d recommend until I know your dog.⁣
