It was a full complement of 48 bowlers on the green yesterday and eight games of triples were played.

On Rink 9 Peter Sharp, Ron McGarry and Mick Foxall played Jake Shurmer, Russ MacPherson and Jeff Adams. After Foxall had the early advantage, Adams slowly worked themselves back into the game and it was 12 all after fifteen ends. Foxall then went on a run, winning all but one of the remaining ends and ran away with the game 25-13.

It was a closer game on Rink 10 where Glen Neil, Peter Ryan and Brian Hope took on Max Elms, John Mackey and Dick Graham. Graham led 18-5 after ten ends before Hope staged a comeback and outscored Graham 18-1 to lead 23-19. Graham won the last two ends and tied the game 23 all.

George Ballard, David McCrea and Jim Russell were up against Kevin Dwyer, Mark McKean and Paul Rodenhuis on Rink 11. Scores were level after six ends before Russell won six of the next seven ends and led by 13. Rodenhuis won the majority of the last eight ends but could not close the gap and the win went to Russell 24-15.

Frank Brouwers, Darryl Howard and Noel Witney scored three 5s in the first five ends against Ron Roberts, Paul Jenkins and Gary Nathan on Rink 12. Witney built on that lead and was leading 24-5 after 10 ends. Nathan had the better of the second half of the game, winning all but three of the ends and closing the gap to 7 shots. In a high scoring game, Witney was the winner 27-20.

On Rink 15 Tony Smith, Peter Bedford and Darryl Shurmer played Russell Dean, Tim Pickstone and John Toole. Shurmer had a 5 shot advantage after nine ends before Toole won the next eight ends and led 21-9. Shurmer won the last four ends, but Toole held on to win 21-15.

It was another close finish on Rink 14 where Greg Stocks, Graham Housler and Allan Clark played Jacob Stocks, Ross Drans1field and Kevin Miller. Miller had a handy 11 shot lead after fifteen ends before Clark finished strongly and won the last six ends but fell just short with Miller taking the win 18-17.

One shot also separated the teams of Terry Chifley, Mick Burke and Glen Carter up against Bill Dawson, John Lane and Peter Drew after twenty-one ends. It was 12 all after thirteen ends and Carter was leading 17-16 after sixteen ends. After scoring 5 shots on the next end Drew had the advantage and held on to take to win 22-21.

In the last game Kevin Lynch, John Bosson and Wayne Eason played Gary Cameron, Ron Hogan and Jim Clark. After trailing early, Eason came back to level scores at 14 all after fourteen ends. Eason kept the pressure on, winning the next four ends and only conceded one end to Clark over the remainder of the game. Eason was the winner 27-17.

The weekend saw Rounds 1 and 2 of the Mixed Pairs competed as well as five social games on Saturday afternoon.

In the first of the Round 1 games Vicki Weal and Mick Sewell played Robyn Rowe and Mick Foxall. Scores were tied at 8 all after eight ends before Sewell set up their win by scoring the next twelve shots, including a 7 on one end. Foxall then scored the next 4 shots, but the gap was too big, with Sewell progressing to the next round, winning 25-12.

It was a low scoring game on Rink 2 where Robyn and Jeff Adams played Ron and Leonie McGarry. There were only three ends where more than a single shot was scored, all before scores were level at 7 all after ten ends. Adams was the more consistent team over the remaining ends, winning all but one and taking the game 14-8.

In the third Round 1 game Glen Carter and Jo Café took on Kerry Lucas and Des Sanders. Café had the better of the early ends and were leading 9-5 after eight ends. Sanders won the mat on the next end and controlled both the ends and the game to be leading 14-9 with two ends to play. Café gave themselves a chance by scoring a 3 on the penultimate end but Sanders won the last end and the game 15-12.

In the final Round 1 game on Rink 4 Liz Draper and Noel Witney played Louise Francis and Mick McDonald. Witney had the better of the first eight ends and was leading 12-6. McDonald played well to score the next 7 shots and take the lead. McDonald outscored Witney 7-2 over the last few ends to take this one 20-16.

In Round 2 action, only a single shot separated the teams of Sue Murray and Peter Drew against Jodie James and Glen Urza after eighteen ends. Urza scored a 4 on the first end and was leading 15-9 after twelve ends. Drew slowly closed the gap over the next five ends and levelled the scores by scoring a single shot on end seventeen. Urza scored the vital last shot to win by the narrowest of margins 16-15.

In the second game Pauline and Allan Clark got off to a good start against Shaun Elphick and Kathy Evans and were leading 8-0 after four ends. Evans won the next two ends, but Clark never let them into the game and went on to win the match 20-6.

It was a similar story in the game where Robyn and Jeff Adams played Louise Francis and Mick McDonald. Adams led 9-0 and had a stranglehold on the game throughout, only allowing McDonald to have the mat four times. Adams was too good on the day, winning 25-5.

In the final Round 2 game Kerry Lucas and Des Sanders took on Vicki Weal and Mick Sewell. This game was in the balance after eleven ends with Sewell leading 9-8. However Sewell put the pressure on by scoring the next 5 shots and then went on to win all remaining ends and the game 20-8.

The semi-finals will be played next Saturday with Pauline and Allan Clark playing Jodie James and Glen Urza and Robyn and Jeff Adams taking on Vicki Weal and Mick Sewell.

In social play on Saturday Bill Dawson and Mark McKean played Ron Hogan and Marcus Ronan in a pairs game. Ronan led 14-4 after eleven ends. McKean slowly pulled back the lead but was still down 13-17 with two ends to play. McKean won both ends and tied the game at 17 all.

In the second pairs game Kevin Dwyer and Allan Clark played Paul Jenkins and Gary Nathan. Clark was down 10-14 after fifteen ends but was stuck on 10 as Nathan won the next seven ends to go out to lead by 14. Clark won the last three ends, but Nathan took the win 24-13.

It was a comfortable win in the end to John Bosson, Frank Brouwers and John Mackey against Russell Deans, John Banning and Paul Rodenhuis. Mackey had a big lead 16-2 after seven ends before Rodenhuis closed the gap to 5 shots with six ends to play. Mackey won all these ends and the game 29-13.

It was a closer game on Rink 12 where Judy Sharp, Bill Mackey and Darryl Shurmer played Max Elms, George Ballard and Lotsi Koszta. Koszta won the first two ends and built up a 12-shot lead after thirteen ends. Shurmer then outscored Koszta 11-2 to be within 3 shots with two ends to play. These ends were split and Koszta held on to win 25-21.

In the last social game Graham Housler, Dennis Harvey and Greg Hallett played Peter Sharp, Dick Graham and John Toole. Hallett won the first two ends and built up an 8 shot lead after fourteen ends. Toole then won three ends and were only trailing 14-16 with four ends to play. Hallett won the majority of there and won a close game 20-16.

After a couple of weeks break due to the inclement weather, 41 bowlers took to the green on Tuesday, and seven games of triples were played. There were also 22 bowlers on Wednesday morning.

On Rink 9 Paul Jenkins, Jim Russell and Jeff Adams were up against Bill Mackey, Ron McGarry and John Toole. Adams got off to a strong start, winning the first three ends and going on to lead 22-10 after twelve ends. Toole staged a comeback over three ends to get within 4 shots, but Adams went away over the last ends and took the win comfortably 31-10.

At the end of the game on Rink 10 only 1 shot separated the sides of Bill Dawson, Kevin Arrow and Gordon Death playing Frank Brouwers, Peter Ryan and Greg Hallett. Scores were level after eleven ends before Death scored nine of the next eleven shots to be leading 19-12 with four ends to play. Hallett won all of these ends but fell just short with Death holding on to win a close one 19-18.

On Rink 11 Ron Roberts, Jim Clark and Dan Rochfort played Russell Deans, Ross Dransfield and Gary Nathan. Rochfort took the lead on the second end and led until Nathan tied the scores on end 12. Scores were level again at 13 all before Nathan won all but one of the remaining ends to run away with the game 27-14.

George Ballard played sw***er with Graham Housler and Paul Rodenhuis against John Bosson and Allan Clark. Rodenhuis had the better of the first fourteen ends and was leading 13-7 at that point. Clark scored a 5 on the next end and was in control for the rest of the game, winning all the ends and winning 24-13.

Kevin Dwyer, John Lane and Mark McKean led from the first end against Russ MacPherson, Darryl Howard and John Mackey and were never headed. McKean only dropped one of the first eight ends and although Mackey won their share of the remaining ends, they could not close the gap, and McKean took the win 25-10.

On Rink 14 Ron Hogan, Rob Perkins and Brian Hope took on Mick Burke, Tony O’Neil and Peter Drew. Hope won the first seven ends and led 13-0. Drew got back into the game by winning the next 5 ends, but it was not enough. Hope won six of the remaining ends and went on to win 21-12.

In the last game of the day Glenn Neale, Paul Delaney and Noel Witney played Jake Shurmer, Terry Chifley and Dick Graham. Witney won the first two ends, but Graham then took a big lead after outscoring Witney 18-3 over seven ends. Graham was still leading by 11 shots after fifteen ends. Witney finished the better of the teams, scoring 12 shots to 2, but fell just short, with Graham taking the win 23-22.

On Wednesday morning Rod Jones, Sue Murray and Glen Carter played Merle Stephens, Liz Draper and Noel Witney on Rink 9. Carter won the first four ends, but Witney came back and was trailing by only a single shot after eight ends. It was an even contest before Carter scored 5 shots on end twelve and held on to win 15-12 despite Witney winning the last two ends.

It was good to see Mel Parker back on the green, playing with Val Zylstra and John Toole against Ian Hobba, Ralph Parsons and Robyn Adams. After scoring 6 shots on end nine, Toole had a handy 12-4 lead. Adams scored 6 shots over the next four ends to get close, but Toole won the last end and the game 15-10.

On Rink 11 Betsy Thornberry, Kerry Lucas and Kathy Evans played Raylee Barnes, Robyn Stenhouse and Mick Foxall. After being down 0-5 after three ends, Evans outscored Foxall over the next seven ends and was leading 13-7. It was Foxall who then went on a run, winning all remaining ends and the game 19-13.

The final game was a pairs game with Vicki Weal and Paul Rodenhuis playing Judy Sharp and Gary Nathan. Rodenhuis had the better start and led 15-5 but Nathan had closed the gap to 3 shots after thirteen ends. Nathan won their share of the remaining ends but Rodenhuis scored 13 shots to 8 and won comfortably in the end, 28-19.

A perfect winter’s day brought the bowlers out in numbers on Saturday, and 40 bowlers played six games of triples and a game of pairs. It was good to see both Tim Pickstone and Ron Hollebone back on the green and visitor Warren Lambert was welcomed as well.

On Rink 1 Tim Pickstone, Ron McGarry and Paul Galvin were up against Ron Hollebone, Jeff Adams and Mick McDonald. McDonald had the better of this game, leading 15-2 after nine ends. Galvin closed the gap to five shots before McDonald won all but two of the remaining ends and went on to win 27-15.

Ron Hogan, Glen Carter and David Josh played Max Elms, Jo Café and Craig Bush on Rink 2. Little separated the sides after thirteen ends with Bush leading 12-11. However, Josh did not get the mat back and Bush won the last seven ends to have a comfortable win 25-11.

Bill Dawson, Warren Lambert and Lotsi Koszta took on Kevin Dwyer, Mark McKean and Peter Drew on Rink 3. Drew had a big lead 19-5 after twelve ends but Koszta held their own over the rest of the game, winning 5 ends to 4 and holding Drew to single shots. Koszta could not close the gap, and Drew scored a 23-12 win.

John Mackey and Darryl Shurmer played Vicki Weal and Mick Foxall in the pairs game. Shurmer never really got going in this game and Foxall was much too good on the day, recording a big win 34-13.

On Rink 5 Steve Rowland, Dennis Harvey and John Toole were leading comfortably after twelve ends against Robyn Rowe, Dick Graham and Leonie McGarry. Down 6-17, McGarry won the next six ends to get back into the game. Toole led 18-17 with the last end to play and they scored 2 shots to take the win 20-17.

Judy Sharp, John Lane and Noel Witney played Graham Housler, John Bosson and Gary Nathan on Rink 6. Witney had a good lead after thirteen ends, up 17-9. Witney went on to win the majority of the remaining ends and was too good on the day, winning 26-13.

In the final game Paul Jenkins, Liz Draper and Paul Rodenhuis played Peter Sharp, George Ballard and Pauline Clark. After the first thirteen ends, scores were level at 12 all. Clark scored the next seven shots over four ends and when they scored a 4 on end nineteen, the game was beyond Rodenhuis. Clark was the winner 25-13.
